Ingvar Kamprad, was born in southern Sweden in 1926 and grew up on a farm called Elmtaryd, near the small town of Agunnaryd, in the Swedish province of Smaland. He created IKEA at the age of 17, in 1943, with the money that his father had given him to take out good grades. He then registered the name IKEA: the first two letters (I and K), for which initials of his first and last name, and the last two (E and A), for the names of the farmb(Elmtaryd) and the town (Agunnaryd) where he grew up. At first he dedicated himself to selling of small items such as matchboxes, which he sold to farmers in the area, delivering them at home aboard his bicycle. He realized that he could buy very cheap matches wholesale and sell them individually at a cheap price, earning a good profit margin. Little by little he was expanding his small business, also selling fish, decorative objects for Christmas trees, seeds, wallets, and later, pencils and pens.

In 1948, Kamprad made the decision that would then become the key of the success of his still incipient business project: try selling furniture. From this moment on, events accelerate in the course of the Ingvar’s business life and the growth of the Ikea brand: in 1950, Kamprad approves engage solely in the sale of home furnishings; a year later, in 1951, the firm publishes its first furniture catalogue, which it distributes massively and which, even today, remains the company’s main marketing tool;
In 1953, the businessman set up the first showroom on the outskirts of his city.
(not sales) of Ikea products. The combined success of these initiatives was such that the furniture cartel, which in the middle
century dominated the business in Sweden began to put pressure on suppliers to stop supplying Ikea, which was also excluded from the most important in the sector.

Between 1955 and 1958, and as a reaction to the environment against which their competitors, Kamprad made three other fundamental decisions that would mark, definitively, what today is the Ikea Group: designing, manufacturing and selling its own
furniture; import raw materials from abroad, mainly from different Asian countries; and take refuge in their exhibition centers that would end, at end, becoming gigantic points of sale, like the first one, opened in 1958 in Älmhult. Just five years later, in 1963, Ikea opened its first store outside of Sweden, in Oslo (Norway); in 1965, it opened in Kungens Kurva (Stockholm), which was to be the group’s flagship store, with 45,800 square meters and with a circular design inspired by the architectural style of the Guggenheim Museum in New York. From then on, the expansion The international movement of the Ikea Group has been unstoppable until it has become one of the leading multinational companies in Europe, which has more than 200 stores
in fifty countries, which provides employment for 84,000 people and which, in 2004, closed its balance sheet with a turnover of 12,800 million euros.

In Sweden it is common to say that Per-Albin Hansson, the country’s Social Democratic leader mid-twentieth century, built the home of the people, but that was Ingvar Kamprad who actually furnished it. In fact, the founder of Ikea, in addition to obtaining benefits, he has always aspired “to make life pleasant for people in his home”, something that he has undoubtedly achieved for a large part of the citizens of the European Union, where Ikea sells 50% of its products.

Ingvar’s Vision

Ingvar Kamprad’s journey began with a humble upbringing in rural Sweden, where he imbibed values of frugality and entrepreneurship. His primary vision was to make quality furniture and home furnishings affordable and accessible to the masses. This vision emerged from his early experiences, including selling matchboxes and various small items to local farmers. Ingvar’s foresight allowed him to recognize the potential for profitability in selling furniture, leading him to pivot his business towards this sector.

Objectives of the Founder

Affordable Furnishings: One of Ingvar’s key objectives was to provide affordable furnishings to a broader audience. He achieved this by implementing cost-effective production methods, efficient supply chains, and flat-packaging, which reduced transportation costs and assembly times. This strategy allowed IKEA to offer stylish and functional furniture at lower prices.

Innovative Marketing: The publication of IKEA’s first furniture catalogue in 1951 marked a significant milestone. Ingvar’s objective was to use the catalogue as a powerful marketing tool, showcasing a wide range of products and inspiring customers with room setups. This approach remains integral to IKEA’s marketing strategy today.

Vertical Integration: Ingvar recognized the importance of vertical integration to maintain control over quality and costs. He decided to design, manufacture, and sell his own furniture, enabling IKEA to maintain consistent quality and offer competitive prices.

Global Expansion: Another crucial objective was to take IKEA beyond Sweden’s borders. Ingvar initiated international expansion in the 1960s, opening stores in Norway and later in other countries. This expansion laid the foundation for IKEA’s global presence.
