The Importance of Effective Communication and Decision-Making in Managerial Success

QUESTION

What is a good peer response to this?

Working at my current location of employment I have had both the best and worst manager I have ever worked for. One manager stands out for taking my worst manager spot. They exhibited multiple issues that ended up leading to a majority of the shift quitting and many people suffering mental health issues. This ineffectiveness was due to the manager’s inability to communicate effectively and make sound decisions during a difficult time. A manager’s ability to communicate effectively and build effective relationships with associates is vital. This manager, however, had a very large ego and constantly talked down to associates and was treated poorly due to this. Many associates felt unappreciated and used due to the way they were talked to by this manager.

When it comes to decision making a manager must decide on a solution and stand by it. Many unusual instances can come up during a shift and making strong sound judgments based on the situation and possible outcomes is vital in a fast-paced environment. This is where the second area of ineffectiveness for this manager comes in. They were very quick to make decisions without communicating or fully understanding the issue prior to taking some form of action. This would often leave many associates overworked trying to remedy the issues created by the decision or other managers needing to be called in to help reverse the previous decision. While we will never get every decision right, we must consider all the information available to us in making our decision. This manager, however, would panic and jump the gun when it came to making and implementing some sort of plan. This also goes back to my first answer and the manager having an ego to where they felt they knew everything, and the information others had was not pertinent to them.

On the reverse side, one of the best managers was the opposite of this mindset. They were very associate oriented and focused on team building and trying to let associates not only input their ideas but take the lead in trying to implement them as well. This focus on growth and letting associates develop themselves and learn from first-hand experience not only created better associates but also helped them understand some of the finer details about the company and its operations through their testing of new ideas.

This manager also was not afraid to “get their hands dirty.” If they saw people struggling due to understaffing or surprising conditions, they were more than willing to lend a hand to help. This, while not a manager’s first duty, was huge in creating an environment of trust and respect. Where the first manager displayed a superior ego, this manager showed that they were not better than anyone else, they were also there to do what was necessary to get the job done. It made the associates feel respected and appreciated that the manager took them into consideration even though what they were doing wasn’t something they had to do.

The first manager found it very hard to grow and earn the respect not only of hire management but also lower due to the resistance and pushback they received due to their management practices. This inevitably ended up holding them back from potential growth as people became unwilling to help and work with them due to their superior attitude and feelings of being disrespected. My other manager, however, has absolutely flourished in their endeavors and grown exponentially. They were only 22 when they became an area manager for my warehouse. In less than a year they are now flying around the country touring facilities and helping come up with new processes for the company. Even through all of this if I have an issue or just want to talk, he is more than willing to take time out of his day to have a chat and help any associate that just wants to have a conversation. Even though they have been gone for a little while now from our facility people will still talk about them in the highest regards. By just having strong personal relation skills you can learn and grow in ways you may not have expected. No one can know everything, and new ideas may come from the most unlikely of places. By having the openness to listen and talk with your associates you may learn something new that can help in your career while also aiding them in their goals.

The Importance of Effective Communication and Decision-Making in Managerial Success

Introduction

In my current place of employment, I have encountered both exemplary and subpar managers. One manager stands out as the worst, primarily due to their poor communication skills and hasty decision-making, which resulted in a high turnover rate and negative impacts on associates’ mental health. In contrast, another manager demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities by prioritizing effective communication, team building, and active involvement in the workforce. This essay delves into the significance of communication and decision-making skills for managerial success and employee satisfaction.

Effective Communication Builds Strong Relationships

A manager’s ability to communicate effectively plays a vital role in establishing strong relationships with associates. The worst manager I encountered possessed a large ego and often condescended to the team, leading to feelings of being unappreciated and undervalued. Such an approach not only damages employee morale but also erodes trust and respect for the manager. On the contrary, the best manager I worked with was associate-oriented and emphasized team building, allowing associates to contribute their ideas and even lead their implementation. This approach fostered a positive work environment and helped associates grow and develop through firsthand experiences.

Decisiveness and Sound Judgment

In a fast-paced work environment, a manager’s ability to make timely and well-informed decisions is crucial. Unfortunately, the worst manager I encountered lacked the necessary discernment and often made impulsive decisions without fully understanding the issues at hand or consulting with the team. As a consequence, associates were left overworked, and the need for damage control arose frequently. In contrast, the best manager demonstrated strong decision-making skills by considering all available information before arriving at a solution. This approach ensured that decisions were thoughtfully made and had a positive impact on the workforce.

Leading by Example

A remarkable aspect of the best manager’s leadership style was their willingness to lead by example. When faced with understaffing or challenging conditions, this manager would not hesitate to lend a hand and support the team. This demonstrated their commitment to the well-being of associates and created an environment of trust and respect. In contrast, the worst manager’s superior attitude and reluctance to get involved in the team’s challenges hindered their growth and respect from both higher and lower management.

The Impact on Career Growth

Effective communication and decision-making have a profound influence on a manager’s career growth and success. The best manager’s ability to build strong relationships, foster an open environment for idea-sharing, and demonstrate a genuine interest in the associates’ well-being propelled their career to new heights. In less than a year, they rose to an area manager position and have since been instrumental in developing new processes for the company. Their openness to communication and willingness to listen continue to earn them high regard even after leaving our facility.

Conclusion

The experiences with the best and worst managers have highlighted the critical role of effective communication and decision-making in managerial success. Building strong relationships, making sound judgments, and leading by example are essential qualities that distinguish outstanding managers from mediocre ones. A manager’s ability to create a positive work environment and foster a sense of respect and appreciation among associates leads to increased job satisfaction, higher productivity, and, ultimately, personal and professional growth. By embracing these traits and maintaining open communication with their team, managers can not only excel in their careers but also positively impact the lives of those they lead.
