need help replying with in text citation and reference
Currently I am not having any issues in my internship. I will approach this from a current personal problem I am having in my life. Our AC is shot. I am serious when I say the word shot. A jolt of lightning shot into the ground and the electricity surge fried my outdoor unit. Let me apply this situation to the IDEAL method.
I- Have the problem saying in your own text: My air conditioner is fried and we need a new one.
D- What is the goal for problem solving? To call and make a claim with the insurance company to get a replacement.
E- Brainstorm strategies; make lists and go from there. We sat down and made a list of what we did, the money we spent on a window unit, the number of the claim once we called and the dates told to us for the adjuster to come out. Also, we need to pay the deductible so make sure we have that money. Finally, what if the insurance company does not pay, how do we get this huge sum of money? Loans? Drain the savings?
A- Of the potential steps, which one is the best option to use and take action? We did the insurance calls first.
L- Look and learn from a problem solving perspective and reflect. Since we have gotten a complete joke of a run around from the insurance company, we decided to go to the bank and get a loan. We will then fight for reimbursement from the insurance company. We have been without air conditioning for eighteen days and the house is a challenge with our pets and child with autism (who is at his grandparents).
The word IDEAL means to Identify, Describe outcome, Explore possible strategies, Anticipate outcomes & act, and Look & Learn (Sippl 2023). We are always problems aware and solutions focused. Using this model and typing it out was very similar to how we handled the issue. We just didn’t categorize it in the actual letters format for the word IDEAL. I use this method often in my internship with coaching just with different words.
In the past before I was knowledgeable in this method via my coaching education and this article, I could have avoided extra time loss and frustration had I stayed focused in this manner of IDEAL. It is a challenge when frustrations are high and immediate results are wanted. I could have used this in the past when I was having troubles with a student who was not responding to my methods at school. This works similar to the ABC method of behavior management. I do like the additional parts of Look and Learn and Anticipate Outcomes. This keeps me in a proactive mind set.
Problem-solving is an essential skill in both personal and professional settings. In this essay, I will reflect on my experience using the IDEAL method for problem-solving, as introduced by Sippl (2023). I will discuss how this method has been helpful in resolving issues in my life, particularly in addressing the problem of a malfunctioning air conditioner. Additionally, I will explore how the IDEAL method could have been beneficial in handling past challenges, such as difficulties with a student’s behavior at school.
The first step in the IDEAL method is to identify the problem clearly. In my case, the issue was with our air conditioner, which was severely damaged during a lightning strike. It left us without any cooling in the scorching summer heat.
The next step is to determine the desired outcome for problem-solving. Our goal was to get a replacement for the fried air conditioner. To achieve this, we decided to make a claim with the insurance company.
Brainstorming strategies is crucial to finding the best approach to solving the problem. In our case, we sat down and made a list of actions to take. This included documenting what happened during the lightning strike, the expenses incurred on temporary cooling solutions, and important details related to the insurance claim. We also anticipated the possibility of the insurance company not fully covering the cost, and we considered alternative options such as taking a loan or utilizing our savings.
Having considered the potential consequences of our actions, we decided to begin with the insurance claim process. Unfortunately, we encountered challenges and delays with the insurance company, leading to frustration and prolonged discomfort in our home. As a result, we adapted our approach and opted to secure a loan from the bank to purchase a new air conditioner. This decision allowed us to take immediate action in resolving the problem.
The final step in the IDEAL method involves reflecting on the problem-solving process. Looking back, we recognized that applying the IDEAL method helped us remain proactive in finding a solution. Despite facing initial setbacks, we learned the importance of being prepared for unexpected obstacles and the value of exploring alternative solutions.
Reflecting on my experiences, I realized that the IDEAL method could have been valuable in dealing with challenges in the past. For instance, when I encountered difficulties with a student’s behavior at school, applying the IDEAL method might have helped me better understand the underlying issues, explore different teaching strategies, anticipate potential outcomes, and make informed decisions to support the student effectively.
In conclusion, the IDEAL method has proven to be a valuable problem-solving approach in my life. By identifying the problem, describing the desired outcome, exploring various strategies, anticipating outcomes, and reflecting on the process, I have been able to tackle issues efficiently and proactively. As I continue my internship and coaching endeavors, I will undoubtedly apply the IDEAL method, leveraging its efficacy in resolving challenges effectively.
