Determine Mark’s Classification

QUESTION

  1. Locate the correct hourly rate for each staff member based on their award including penalty rates which apply for specific times during weekdays and for Saturdays and Sundays.

I have seen the explanation of how to calculate it but I still don’t understand. It is my first time seeing it. Can someone show me one example calculated of Mark?

Thank you.

I am using Hotel Award 2016-2017 for this assessment.

ANSWER

Determine Mark’s Classification

First, you need to identify Mark’s classification or job role within the award. Different positions in the hospitality industry may have different base rates. Let’s assume Mark is a “Front Desk Receptionist,” which is a common position in hotels.

Check the Award for Base Hourly Rate

Refer to the Hotel Award 2016-2017 and find the base hourly rate for a Front Desk Receptionist as of 01 July 2016. This is typically listed in the award under the relevant classification. For this example, let’s say the base rate for a Front Desk Receptionist is $20.00 per hour.

 Determine Penalty Rates

The award often specifies different penalty rates for specific times during weekdays and for weekends (Saturdays and Sundays). Let’s assume the penalty rates are as follows:

Weekdays (Monday to Friday):

Normal hours (e.g., 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM): No penalty rates apply.

Evening hours (e.g., 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM): 20% extra.

Night hours (e.g., 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM): 30% extra.

Weekends (Saturdays and Sundays):

All hours: 50% extra.

Calculate Mark’s Hourly Rate

Now, you can calculate Mark’s hourly rate for different scenarios:

If Mark works during normal hours on a weekday, his hourly rate is the base rate of $20.00 per hour.

If Mark works during evening hours on a weekday, his hourly rate is $20.00 + (20% of $20.00) = $20.00 + $4.00 = $24.00 per hour.

If Mark works during night hours on a weekday, his hourly rate is $20.00 + (30% of $20.00) = $20.00 + $6.00 = $26.00 per hour.

If Mark works on a weekend (Saturday or Sunday), regardless of the time, his hourly rate is $20.00 + (50% of $20.00) = $20.00 + $10.00 = $30.00 per hour.

 Final Calculation

Based on the specific time and day Mark works, you can now determine his hourly rate using the penalty rates provided in the Hotel Award.

Remember that this is just an example, and the actual rates and rules may vary depending on the specific award, classification, and any updates made since 2016. It’s essential to refer to the official award document or consult with your employer or HR department for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding wages and penalty rates.
