1) AMAZON VS. E-BAY:   

  • Most Effective:  Amazon and eBay are sizeable online marketplaces with a robust offering of products where almost anything a consumer can think of can be found on either site. Both marketplaces have taken note of the evolving shopping habits of their consumers working to optimize their apps to create the seamless and convenient shopping experience. In this optimization Amazon has invested much into things like one-click ordering and personalized recommendations where eBay has effectively streamlined the buying and selling process to be user friendly when in the app. While both are comparable by means of ease of use when in their respective apps, I believe Amazon is the leader in m-commerce when sitting side by side with eBay.
    • Justification:  Statista reports that Amazon leads the pack with the number of app downloads across Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store with 34.95 million downloads in 2022 compared to that of eBay’s 9.6 million downloads (Statista, 2023). As such with 3.4 million reviews and a 4.2-star rating on the Google Play Store and 7.7 million reviews in the Apple App store with a 4.8-star rating there is a mostly positive take that the app is more streamlined at checkout when compared to competition alongside easier navigation of product search, detailed information of product features, and better product quality.
  • Least Steps:  When determining if Amazon or eBay has the least number of steps to complete the purchase from micro to macro conversion, I believe Amazon provides the least number of steps?
    • Justification:  Amazon offers the consumer the capability to add billing and shipping information easily allowing the consumer a one-click ordering process with said default billing and shipping information with further capability to combine orders to reduce shipping costs. Where “cart abandonment” is high at 85.6% the process of a one-click checkout offers convenience and reduces the likelihood of lost sales to a complex checkout process (Zinkovska, 2023). Adversely PayPal is the recommended method to buy products from eBay safely – seemingly a major inconvenience for those not familiar with PayPal and further working to ostracize consumers from choosing to buy products on eBay. In that, a part of the checkout process includes having to choose the payment method and choosing a shipping method essentially eliminating the option for a 1-click checkout. Further, in adding PayPal account information the consumer must login to PayPal to access payment adding additional steps to the initial checkout process. When compared to Amazon this process would including adding initial card information without having to log in to a separate site to gain access to payment information.
