Ryan and Deci are best known for the of Self-Determination theory. Self-determination theory is the framework to help understand how people motivate themselves and how motivation ties into personality. Self-determination theory states that if a person seeks pleasant sensations and minimizes pain, they are going to find more positive motivation and happiness (Funder, 2019). While people can be motivated by external validations like reward systems, internal motivations are just as important to determine a person’s desire to participate in activities and the satisfaction they receive from participating. For me, I know I can feel like going to the gym is a daunting task. However, sometimes I use open communication with my personal trainer to motivate myself to go. If I know he is expecting me, I won’t want to let him down. This is an external validation. The desire to be healthy and strong is my internal motivation.

There is a lot of support surrounding Ryan and Deci’s theory of Self-Determination. Many companies are seeking the understanding of this research to better manage their staff and to create a better work life balance for all employees. George Kelly was a psychologist whose approach to personality psychology focused on an individual’s independent experience of the world. Through this approach Kelly established the Personal Construct Theory (PCT). Kelly perceived constructs as bipolar discriminations and are dichotomous (e.g., good-bad) (Funder, 2019). In order to examine an individual’s construct of the world, Kelly created a role construct repertory test (Rep test). He believed that these constructs originate from past experiences and expectations and build the frameworks to one’s thoughts, beliefs, opinions, and viewpoint of the world (Funder, 2019). An important aspect of PCT that Kelly noted was PCT, although originating from past experiences, is not predetermined by those past experiences, but rather the individual’s choice of how they will translate those experiences. Essentially, with his approach, one’s past does not set their future. As one individual has their own PC so does everyone else, and according to Kelly, in order to understand another individual, it is important to be understanding of their PC; this is known as sociality corollary (Funder, 2019). Another important note of Kelly’s theory is the emphasis of choice and this is also seen in constructive alternativisim – another idea of Kelly’s personality theory. With this idea, individuals are subject to alternative constructions/construals which they can freely chose.

A huge strength of this approach is the emphasis of understanding and promoting individual differences in personality. This theory focuses on the uniqueness of each individual and their perception of themselves and the world around them – encouraging individuality. Furthermore, this approach has been examined in the education. Clark (1998) found that awareness and understanding of PC by teachers can help comprehend unforeseeable and perplexing behavior in their students. Personal Construct Psychology (PCP) has also show the value of important relationships. When using PCP, valuable relationships, problem solving in relationships, and peer disagreement and resolution have been examined, indicating the benefit of PCP (Maxwell, 2006). PCT shows that an individual’s personal values are not fixed, but change – this is observed in another experiment that examined customer consumption experiences and their interactions with retailers (Babin et al., 2019).
The great weakness above all is that his theory still lacks empirical evidence (Kuska et al., 2016). Additionally, his approach is based on paradigms, in which this theory can ignore some aspect of human psychology (Funder, 2019). This can be a result of bias or simply ignorance of other important areas human psychology. Another limitation to PCT is the interpretation of personal constructs. Failure to understand personal constructs due to bias or difficult can be consequential.
