The first half of this course has provided significant material that supplied ample knowledge from every direction, giving insight into the business aspect of the logistics field. The approach that the course is disseminating the information by providing topics and allowing students to choose the topic and discuss it as they feel appropriate allowed me to gain so much knowledge in just a short period. The material and coursework provided the knowledge and the insight on how business logistics within any firm can determine the success or failure of an organization. The reading material states that for an organization to achieve goals, it needs to have a sufficient supply chain and be fully engaged from supplier to final customer. This brings up the importance of incorporating internal and external innovations. Businesses need to maintain and improve areas of strength to stay ahead of all competitor firms. With constant growth and technological development, it continuously brings new processes to the forefront, requiring all firm personnel to adapt, starting with leaders. Leaders and managers who understand how much innovation will benefit from process improvements, allowing them to gain and keep the lead over the competitors (Poirier, Quinn, & Swink, 2009).
Within the green supply chain topic, I grasped that it is more than just recycling materials; it is a complex system that requires a lot of planning and preparation, ultimately benefiting the environment and the firm. Implementing “green practices” has always grasped my attention throughout all courses about transportation and logistics. Before any classes, I knew about firms taking steps to be more environmentally friendly; however, I failed to realize until recently that green approaches are regulated. With this, for a company to achieve a green supply chain, its green supply chain practices and sustainability performance must form an environmental collaboration. If broken down, a green supply chain will include green distribution, procurement, warehousing, and transportation. Another valuable lesson and information for me was the discussion on measuring performance. An essential takeaway is the understanding that it is not solely a competition of firms’ performances but instead of supply chain performances. Supply chain performance includes components, materials, sub-assemblies, and products. The focus surrounds reaching the end state of meeting the customer’s requirement. To fulfill customers, requirements, areas of focus are product demand, quality of material, turnaround time, delivery time, availability, and inventory. Supply chain performance measures do not stop there; they include organizational functions such as sales and marketing, procurements, research and development, and distribution. Week four provided clear information that gave a comprehensive understanding of how a new supply chain may seek improvement by implementing performance measures that support global supply chain performances. The first four weeks of this course have presented numerous aspects that provided a ray of information and great details of supply chain management. Although the topics provided were not assigned or given a specific question, I have realized that I can connect all the material and how some aspects work together or separately for a supply chain, from discussing a green supply chain to understanding how collaborations are established and their benefits and also knowing what performances are, how they can affect the supply chain performance. I have liked how the course is provided in a more freelance approach, removing limits on information and welcoming a more peer-to-peer learning forum.
