The Polish culture is rich in history and traditions, and understanding its cultural influences on health-seeking and promotion behaviors is essential for providing culturally competent nursing care

QUESTION

As the world becomes smaller through travel and instant communication ability, nurses must be more aware and knowledgeable regarding the cultural influences on health seeking and promotion behaviors. To help develop a trusting relationship with individuals, families and communities, nurses must demonstrate cultural acceptance. Without this understanding, holistic care cannot occur.

Choose a culture (I chose the Polish culture) you see in your practice or one that is of interest to you and discuss each of the following aspects:

value orientation,

family,

religious beliefs and practices,

illness,

health,

healing,

death and dying practices

birth and child care,

treatments.

For example, how is modesty expressed by men and women of one culture? Are there any restrictions related to exposure of body parts? How does the person perceive and accept change related to health practices? What is the role of nutrition and health?

Please post your choice of cultures early so that others can find another culture to research-that way we can learn about a wider variety of the people in our world. However, it is acceptable if three or even four of you choose the same culture/religious group-I want this discussion to be of personal benefit for each of you.

Some suggestions include: Amish, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Hispanic, Islam, Native Americans, Hmongs, Burmese (a large population here in Denver), Chinese, or any other you may want to research.

I chose the Polish culture. PLEASE HELP.

ANSWER

The Polish culture is rich in history and traditions, and understanding its cultural influences on health-seeking and promotion behaviors is essential for providing culturally competent nursing care. Exploring various aspects of the Polish culture sheds light on their value orientation, family dynamics, religious beliefs and practices, views on illness and health, healing methods, death and dying practices, birth and child care practices, as well as approaches to treatments.

Value Orientation
Polish culture is often characterized by strong family values and a sense of collectivism. Family plays a central role in Polish society, with an emphasis on maintaining close relationships and providing support to family members, especially during times of need. Respect for elders and authority figures is highly valued.

Family
Family bonds are crucial in the Polish culture. Extended families often live near each other, and family gatherings are frequent, fostering a sense of togetherness and support. Elders are revered and consulted for guidance, and their opinions hold great significance in family decisions.

Religious Beliefs and Practices
Catholicism is a predominant religion in Poland, deeply influencing the culture’s beliefs and practices. Many Poles adhere to Catholic traditions and rituals, participating in religious celebrations and attending church services regularly. Religious holidays, such as Christmas and Easter, hold significant importance in Polish culture.

Illness and Health
Poles place a strong emphasis on maintaining good health and preventing illness. Traditional remedies and natural treatments are commonly used alongside modern medicine. Family members often contribute to caregiving and support during times of illness.

Healing
Holistic approaches to healing are valued in the Polish culture. Herbal remedies, teas, and home-cooked soups are often used for their healing properties. Traditional healers, known as “ziolniki,” provide herbal treatments and advice on maintaining health.

Death and Dying Practices
Catholicism heavily influences Polish attitudes towards death and dying. Funeral traditions are rooted in religious rituals, with funeral services and wakes being important communal events. Respect for the deceased is paramount, and mourning periods are observed.

Birth and Child Care
Childbirth is seen as a family event, and support from family members is expected during pregnancy and childbirth. Gender roles are fairly traditional, with women often taking on the primary caregiver role for children.

Treatments
In addition to modern medical interventions, Poles may seek alternative treatments and home remedies. Trust in traditional healers and herbalists persists, especially in rural areas.

Understanding these cultural aspects enables nurses to provide patient-centered care that respects and incorporates Polish cultural values and preferences. Effective communication, sensitivity to family involvement, and acknowledgment of religious practices can foster trust and enhance the overall healthcare experience for Polish individuals and families.
