1) Naomi is a 23 year old college student in NYC with Schizophrenia. Before the documentary, Naomi had undergone 4 drug trials with no success. Her symptoms consisted of hearing persistent, negative voices, and dissociating because of it. She even made suicide attempts, that she would then back out of. Her mother is a schizophrenic, and both her father and middle brother have manic depressive disorder. Through the documentary, she began a new drug trial at an outpatient clinic in hopes of getting rid of the voices.

After the first 3 month check in, she stated she was feeling sick and fatigued. She had fallen behind in some of her classes and was still hearing voices. She stated the voices had become more negative and she felt she couldn’t have any solitude. The doctor increased the medication and she went back to school. Before finals, Naomi had a breakdown, becoming overwhelmed by the voices, resulting in a mute, catatonic state.

After a month of hospitalization and a new medication, Naomi was less paranoid and barely hearing voices for the first time in 3 years. The voices she did hear were “pleasant and vague.” Her symptoms of feeling fatigued and sick were gone. She was even able to have a relationship for about 6 months after her hospitalization. After the end of filming, Naomi was still not hearing voices, but she was still having trouble concentrating. She was planning to graduate at the end of the school year.

2) Glen is a 53 year old wedding photographer from Seattle suffering with OCD. He has repetitive checking compulsions and cleaning compulsions. His symptoms made it impossible to work, and affected his personal relationships, resulting in two divorces. He would need to check things so many times, he would be unable to do the task at hand. Specifically, when working as a photographer, he would be checking the camera so much, he wouldn’t ever take photos. His cleaning obsession kept him washing his hand for up to an hour at a time, using a bar of soap a day. He had an aversion to dirt from a young age.

Glen was undergoing psychosurgery at the suggestion of his current girlfriend during the documentary. The operation consisting of destroying a part of the brain that is hyperactive. Glen was in a pseudo-aware anesthesia state during the surgery, where the surgeon went in, using tools to creat small lesion in his brain. He was able to fly back to Seattle within a few days of the surgery, though it would take months before the effectiveness of the procedure could be determined.

After 18 months, Glen and his girlfriend, Maureen, came back for a check in. Maureen thought she had seen improvement in Glen, although his symptoms and illness were still present. He was able to go back to working, and his hands were no longer cracked and bleeding. The hospital offered to a second procedure to creatnbigger lesion, hoping to further abate the symptoms. Maureen encouraged Glen to do so, but he ultimately decided against it. By the end of the video Glen was still incessantly washing his hands, but was working with Maureen as a wedding photographer again.
