Natural birth occurs where there is little or no pharmacological intervention during delivery. The natural birth concept is of the notion that childbirth need not be accompanied by excessive pain. The process focuses on the mother’s conscious effort to give birth to her child. Natural birth is regarded as primitive since the mother experiences all the pain caused by labor contractions without seeking modern medicine intervention (Bellefonds & Greenberg, 2021). Natural birth ideology indicates that labor pains emanate from unnatural physical pain caused by fear of the unknown, which can be curtailed through understanding the delivery process.
Natural birth is not free of pain; however, it allows the mother’s physical reactions to surpass the discomfort. Medications such as Pitocin are used to induce labor, while epidural helps speed up the dilation process. Without these medications, the cervix will dilate normally; thus, natural birth may take longer. Mothers chose natural birth based on varying reasons. Many mothers relate to the concept of wanting to be fully in control over the labor process, thus have a more scintillating experience to remember the moment more clearly (Weatherspoon & Hersh, 2019). Another highlighted reason is the need to discover the limits of their bodies since they actively participate in the labor process. Most medications affect the mother as the drugs alter the labor process by increasing or lowering the process.
Natural birth mainly occurs in birthing centers under the supervision of a midwife or doula since all their deliveries are managed without medication use. Natural birth considers other avenues to manage labor pain rather than medical intervention. Various pain management techniques are used, including; water birth, hypnobirthing, breathing techniques, aromatherapy, massage, using distractions such as music, and comfortable positions such as squatting or sitting on a birthing ball.
Various research has been done on natural birth as the subject divides physicians on the most viable birthing technique. On the one hand, is the primitive natural birth and on the other is the advancement of medicine aimed at managing labor pain.
Proponent research includes the benefits of the natural birth process. Natural birth leads to a shorter labor. Many women turn to medications such as epidural to cope with the painful contractions involved in childbirth. However, there is a possibility that the medicines can inhibit the natural release of hormones leading to the inability to feel instincts to push, thus prolonging labor. Women who prefer natural birth experience a shorter pushing phase compared to women under medication (International Doula Institute. International Doula Institute, 2018). The natural release of hormones coupled with being active helps progress the labor. Women managing natural birth use their body reactions more effectively, resulting in shorter delivery.
Natural birth also leads to faster facilitation of breastfeeding. Natural births lead to increased activeness in newborns, which increases interest in breastfeeding. Babies born to mothers who use medications during labor are exhausted due to the prolonged labor process. In addition, the alertness of the baby and mother leads to the establishment of mother-child bonds that reduce trauma to the nipple, which can hinder breastfeeding (Crossland, Kingdon, Balaam, Betrán, & Downe, 2020). According to research, babies that start breastfeeding immediately after birth possess improved long-term breastfeeding rates since they breastfeed exclusively for up to four months. There is also the possibility that epidural medication can create swelling on the nipple leading to delayed breastfeeding.
Research shows that natural birth also leads to faster recovery time. Natural birth leads to the production of hormones after the labor process that aid in the recovery process. The side effects of epidural medicines such as back pain and itchiness increase the recovery time for medically induced labor. Besides, it is less likely that natural birth will lead to severe perineal tear since one controls the instincts and sensations happening during the labor process and can slow down the process. Natural births also shorten the time mothers can move around after birth. The shortened time is also a factor that aids in expedited recovery. The method of natural birth decreases the need for risky surgical interventions that can lead to severe bleeding, infections, and increased pain after delivery. Natural birth also led to reduced complications on subsequent pregnancies, while surgeries can cause complications such as miscarriage and stillbirths.
Critics of natural birth cite research on the potential risks concerned with the natural birth process. Natural childbirth does not eliminate pain; thus, mothers will feel everything involved in the labor process. Natural birth is therefore constrained to mentally and physically fit individuals and can tolerate the labor pain. There are few choices for relieving the labor pain, such as breathing and changing postures to be more comfortable since the process is physically demanding. Natural birth also leads to complications during and after the labor process. Natural birth leads to the risk of increased blood loss. Increased blood loss coupled with prolonged labor can overwhelm the mother leading to more complications to the baby. There are other less potent risks associated with natural birth that can be devastating to the mother post-partum.
There is an increased risk that natural birth can cause damage to the pelvic floor muscles, a condition that leads to prolapse or urinary incontinence. This leads to an inability to control bladder and bowel fluids, increasing antisocial behavior due to fear of embarrassment. Women who deliver naturally are also likely to suffer from fistula, where they are unable to empty their bowels effectively, or some women go to great lengths to access bathrooms. The inability to control the bladder or bowel is lifelong thus can lead to decreased quality of life. The risk of injury is aggravated by age and the number of pregnancies. Damage to a woman’s pelvic floor muscles rises by 6%, where she has experienced natural birth before. The age factor is crucial since muscles are less stretchy as one grows older; thus, the risk of tear is increased (Prosser, Barnett, & Miller, 2018). Natural birth leads to sexual complications faced by the mother during post-delivery due to injuries sustained. There is also the increased risk of injuring the baby when delivering as the labor process is dependent on the mother rather than health professionals.
There are three alternatives to natural childbirth: cesarean section (c-section), vacuum delivery, and forceps delivery. C-section is defined as the process of delivery through a surgical incision made in the abdomen and the uterus walls. According to the CDC, in 2019, 31% of all deliveries in the US were c-sections (FastStats– Cdc.gov, 2021). There are various reasons for performing a c-section, including when the baby is in a breech or traverse position. In a breech position, the bottom is first and sideways in the traverse position. C-section is also performed where the baby is too large to pass through the pelvis, where the placenta covers the cervix, in case of twins, and where the baby is in distress.
Forceps delivery refers to a health professional’s process to help guide the baby’s head through the vagina. Only the head is guided; thus, the rest of the body is delivered naturally. In a vacuum delivery, a healthcare professional applies the suction to the baby’s head and guides the baby from the birth canal (Crossland, Kingdon, Balaam, Betrán, & Downe, 2020). Both forceps and vacuum delivery processes are similar, and both are done in specific situations. The aided delivery processes are done where there is no progress in labor after some time, and the baby’s heartbeat indicates there is an issue with normal delivery. The mother’s health concerns such as high blood pressure also influence the use of aided delivery processes.
The natural birth research supports and conflicts with my beliefs in various circumstances, such as cost-saving and the sacredness of the process. The natural birth process is cost-saving and is often carried out in delivery centers that are not based on profit schemes. The ideology of natural birth rhymes with my belief that delivery costs be subsided. Today, the trend in most hospitals is the use of cesarean section rates as the key performance indicator in obstetrics services, which has led to increased morbidity consequences (Dietz & Exton, 2016). The natural birth process also concurs with my belief that the process is a sacred phenomenon and symbolizes women’s ability and strength. The clashes between natural birth ideology indicate the conflict of interest between natural births and my beliefs and the advancement of modern obstetrics. Natural birth downplays the relevance of medical intervention in the labor process that has been perfected over decades. Today, the population is characterized by obesity and old age, thus increasing the danger to the health of expectant mothers and their babies. Misconceptions lead to a preference for natural birth over medical interventions; therefore, women ignore the risks associated with the natural birth process.
