Step 2: Select a geographic community of interest to you. Make sure it is a community in which you are interested in learning about its people and existing resources. This can either be the community you live in, the community you work in, or a community with a population of interest to you, e.g., Cubans in Little Havana, Haitians in Little Haiti, or LGBTQ+ in Wilton Manors.
Step 3: Begin making plans to complete your windshield survey. You have been divided into small groups of up to 8 students for the discussion. The groups have been assigned in Canvas. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, you will complete the windshield survey by yourself. Use Box 15-3 in your Rector & Stanley Textbook as a guide for completing your windshield survey. You will collect information on the physical, economic, services, and social characteristics of your chosen community.
Step 4: Go out into your community and complete a windshield survey. You can complete the survey by driving around in your car. If possible, it would be easier to ask a family member to drive while you survey the community. I would also recommend walking around in your chosen community, visiting and learning about community organizations and resources, or taking pictures of your chosen community to share with us. Make sure to wear face masks and social distance. Additionally, you could use Google Earth as another tool for completing the windshield survey.
Step 5: Share what you have learned on the discussion board. Summarize the findings of your windshield survey with the following headings:
These are the heading topics in outline:
1) Description and Overview of the Community, 2) Physical Characteristics, 3) Economic Status, 4)Services Available, 5) Social characteristics, 6) Final Impressions and Next Steps. In your final impression, include your interpretation of the health status of your community including the effect of COVID19, discuss the identified needs of the community, and identify your ethical obligations as a caring community/public health nurse. Share interesting pictures if you would like.
