Nervous System Instructions:
Patients may react in different ways when learning about a new diagnosis. Different strategies may be needed to help patients understand technical information.

PEER 1
The disease I selected was meningitis which is an inflammation of fluid and membranes surrounding the brain and spinal fluid. Meningitis can be fungal, bacterial, or viral (Lights, 2022). If I were told I had meningitis, I would immediately go into “how did this happen” mode and start tracing all of my steps to figure out how I got it so I could avoid it in the future. I would most likely also blame stress from work as well. I would explain to a patient there is some infection in the spinal fluid and we need to draw out some fluid to determine how to treat it. I would explain that some forms of meningitis can be treated with something as simple as a some IV antibiotics so they can also prepare for how it is treated as some people (me) do not do well with needles and IV’s (Lights, 2022). The big thing with patients is to explain what is going on and how we can treat it so they can process it.
PEER 2
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is an abnormal condition or disease of the nervous system. A personal reaction to this diagnosis is something I can not write about. I would not know how to feel had I been told the nerve cells in my brain and spinal cord are being affected and that this disease gets worse over time. The root word in amyotrophic is “my/o”, which means muscle; the term “lateral” means toward the side; and “sclerosis” means hardening. ALS begins with the loss of muscle control and weakness in an arm or leg, which is why the term lateral is used. ALS also begins with slurred speech and trouble swallowing however, symptoms depend on which nerve cells are affected. Symptoms might include:
Trouble walking or doing usual daily activities.
Tripping and falling.
Weakness in the legs, feet or ankles.
Hand weakness or clumsiness.
Weakness associated with muscle cramps and twitching in the arms, shoulders and tongue.
Untimely crying, laughing or yawning.
Thinking or behavioral changes. Although I would not be able to write about how I might feel after being diagnosed with this, I would do my best to provide as much information as the patient would need about this disease. To first learn that a person has this is the first thing to deal with. I would allow the patient the time to understand what they are diagnosed with. From there we would thoroughly discuss the treatment options such as medications or special therapies as well as plan out what should be done to in regards to living with this disease
When discussing a diagnosis of meningitis with a patient, it’s important to use clear and simple language to ensure understanding. Instead of using medical jargon like “infection in the spinal fluid,” you could explain it as an “inflammation around the brain and spinal cord that affects the fluid surrounding them.” This approach can help the patient grasp the concept without feeling overwhelmed by technical terms. Additionally, considering the patient’s fear of needles and IVs, you could discuss alternative ways of administering medication, such as oral antibiotics, to make them feel more comfortable during treatment (Lights, 2022).
Understanding technical information is crucial for both healthcare providers and patients. For providers, it ensures accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. For patients, comprehension empowers them to actively participate in their care decisions and manage their health effectively. To make technical information more understandable, you could use visual aids like diagrams or models to illustrate the affected areas and processes. Using relatable analogies can also simplify complex concepts. For instance, you could compare the inflammation around the brain and spinal cord to a protective cushion that gets inflamed due to an infection.
Diagnosing someone with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is undoubtedly challenging due to the progressive and debilitating nature of the disease. To help patients better understand this diagnosis, it’s essential to use empathy and patience. Instead of solely focusing on medical terms, you could start by explaining that ALS is a condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and difficulty in various daily activities. This approach provides a broader understanding before delving into technical details.
Understanding technical information is crucial for healthcare providers and patients alike. For providers, it ensures accurate assessment, treatment planning, and monitoring of the disease’s progression. Patients benefit by being equipped with knowledge to actively participate in their care decisions and potentially slow down disease progression through proactive lifestyle modifications and interventions. To enhance understanding, you could use real-life examples of how the disease progresses, focusing on the specific symptoms the patient is experiencing. Creating a supportive environment and offering emotional support are also key aspects of patient-centered care for those with ALS.
