These individuals, known as “Medicine men,” played a vital role as primary healthcare providers within their communities, taking on the duty of caring for the sick. However, their understanding of illnesses and treatment methods was mainly based on trial and error due to the absence of established scientific knowledge and research. Consequently, the recognition of evidence-based practice had not yet been acknowledged. It was customary during this era to attribute disease and death to malevolent spirits.

During the Middle Ages, spanning from 500 to 1500 AD, society gradually adopted the concept of self-care and communal support, heavily influenced by the prevalent practice of Christianity, which is clearly depicted in biblical teachings. Nevertheless, the responsibility of caregiving remained exclusive to men, resulting in the labeling of women who attempted to provide healing or medical assistance as synonymous with the term “witches.”

The Industrial Revolution, which occurred in the 1700s, brought about the invention of numerous machines and the establishment of centralized workplaces, commonly referred to as factories. As a result, people from different regions started migrating to cities in search of employment opportunities within these establishments. However, these communities were ill-prepared to handle the sudden increase in population, leading to unsanitary conditions and the spread of diseases. It was not until the 18th century that the connection between health, cleanliness, and the transmission of diseases became evident. This period also witnessed the emergence of the concept of public health. For instance, in 1946, the Communicable Disease Center was established in the United States.

Towards the end of the 18th century, a notable figure in the field of nursing emerged, Florence Nightingale. She claimed to have received a calling from God as a young woman, urging her to care for those in need. Her most significant contribution was her nursing efforts during the Crimean War, where she emphasized basic hygiene practices, such as handwashing, exposure to sunlight, and attention to diet. Despite the resistance faced, including the limited employment opportunities for females in British hospitals at the time, Nightingale eventually became the chief nurse of a hospital in Turkey. However, her impact extended beyond her immediate context and played a crucial role in shaping the field of nursing (Dean et al., 2022).
