The PRECEDE-PROCEED model

QUESTION

Please help simplify my understanding “PRECEDE-PROCEED model” Example of this model…In Iran, after cardiovascular diseases and road accidents, cancer is the third leading cause of death (Rahimzadeh et al., 2021). For designing an educational program, choosing a proper educational model based on patients’ unmet needs is necessary (Rahemi et al., 2018). The educational program based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model can improve the HRQOL and preventive behaviors in terms of predisposing factors (knowledge, attitude), and enabling factors (family support) in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy. Precede-Proceed Model a cost-benefit assessment framework established by Lawrence W. Green in 1974 that can assist health program effectively. The study aims to determine the effect of an educational program based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) and preventive behaviors in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy.

ANSWER

The PRECEDE-PROCEED model is a comprehensive planning framework that can guide the development and evaluation of health promotion programs. It was established by Lawrence W. Green in 1974 and focuses on identifying factors that influence health behaviors and designing interventions to address those factors. The model consists of two phases: PRECEDE (Predisposing, Reinforcing, and Enabling Constructs in Educational Diagnosis and Evaluation) and PROCEED (Policy, Regulatory, and Organizational Constructs in Educational and Environmental Development).

In the context of the study conducted in Iran, the researchers aimed to determine the effect of an educational program based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model on Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQOL) and preventive behaviors in patients with breast cancer undergoing chemotherapy (Torkan et al., 2022). The educational intervention targeted predisposing factors such as knowledge and attitude towards chemotherapy and enabling factors such as accessibility of resources, health services, policies, family support, and functional skills.

The study found that the educational program led to improvements in preventive behaviors and HRQOL among the participants. These improvements were attributed to the intervention’s focus on addressing the predisposing and enabling factors identified through the PRECEDE-PROCEED model. This suggests that the model was effective in guiding the development of the educational program and targeting the specific factors that influence behaviors in this patient population.

Another study mentioned in the references by Wang et al. (2017) implemented an educational program based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model for patients with chronic heart failure. This study also reported improvements in enabling and predisposing factors such as knowledge and attitude among the participants.

Overall, the PRECEDE-PROCEED model provides a systematic approach to designing interventions that address the multifaceted factors influencing health behaviors. By identifying and targeting predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors, the model helps guide the development of effective educational programs. The use of this model in the studies mentioned demonstrates its applicability and potential for promoting positive health outcomes.
