1. The Goal of this study is to clarify the impact of adverse childhood experiences or ACE’s effects on the volume of the hippocampus and amygdala. This meta-analysis of 1781 participants from 15 peer reviewed papers, examines the volumes on specific regions using MRI samples from young adults comprised of the control and those who have not experienced qualified ACE’s. Across these studies ACE’s are defined as abuse, trauma, neglect, extreme poverty are what qualifies as early life stress. There are gender differences in this study as women are more than twice as likely to experience sexual abuse. Additionally, women have been shown to have a smaller hippocampus. This studies were performed with both men and women and rerun again, using only 11 of the studies for whom data by gender was outlined. The study’s heterogeneity was assessed by using Cochrans Q test which is calculates the weighted sum of differences between study effects pooled across studies and i2 statistic which describes the percentage of variation across studies. The conclusion of the meta-analysis lies with the men who registered who registered ACE as they had marked decrease in hippocampal volume while the sample women had a less evident association. The volume of the amygdala, throughout the research, remained largely unchanged. Many of those who presented with adverse childhood experiences developed psychopathology but the presence of ACE’s does not guarantee such outcomes. However, the greatest decrease in volume were in those with psychopathology.” The hippocampus and the amygdala are especially relevant to the study of the impact of childhood adversity because they are densely populated with glucocorticoid receptors and highly susceptible to the effects of glucocorticoids via damage, dendritic atrophy and neurogenesis suppression . These brain structures are of interest because of evidence that they are altered in psychiatric disorders such as borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, depression and bipolar disorder specifically in the hippocampus.

2. There are very few meta-analysis studies that examine the relationship between parenting styles and children’s self-esteem. It’s important to understand what the latest research suggests about which of these parenting styles is likely to have the most positive effect on a child’s self esteem: Authoritative, Authoritarian, and Permissive. Although parenting styles do not directly cause children’s self esteem levels alone, research has found strong connections between a child’s self esteem and the parenting style they were exposed to. (Pinquart & Gerke, 2019)

In order to further investigate this issue, researchers conducted a meta-analysis where they gathered 1,015 studies that examined the correlation between parenting techniques and the child’s internalization symptoms based on the care they received. (Pinquart, 2017) The studies that were collected included children ranging from the ages of birth to 17 years old.

Pinquart examined multiple dimensions of parenting which included levels of warmth, control, and autonomy and how the receiving children internalized these factors. Based on the review of these studies, children who received warmth, control, and autonomy in association to authoritative parenting showed a small amount of negative internalization symptoms. Children who received high levels of control, and low levels of both warmth and autonomy in association to Authoritarian parenting developed higher and negative internalization symptoms. In regards to longitudinal evidence, children who received authoritative parenting had consistent results of low levels of internalization while authoritarian parenting showed inconsistent results long term with children’s symptoms changing overtime. Based on the evidence provided, it can be suggested that children who receive higher levels of warmth, control, and autonomy have a greater chance of developing their self-esteem due to the positive relationship that is linked with this parenting style in contrast to Authoritarian where levels of warmth, control, and autonomy are low.

ANSWER

“The Impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences on Hippocampus and Amygdala Volumes: A Gender-Based Meta-Analysis”

Response 1: The study’s objective to explore the impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on the hippocampus and amygdala volumes through a meta-analysis is commendable. Drawing on 15 peer-reviewed papers and a substantial participant pool, it uncovers insightful gender differences in relation to ACEs, particularly sexual abuse. This gender-based analysis is crucial in understanding how early life stressors affect brain structures. The findings, indicating a significant decrease in hippocampal volume in men with ACEs, underscore the long-lasting consequences of childhood adversity. The link between ACEs and psychopathology is noteworthy, although not deterministic. The emphasis on hippocampus and amygdala is appropriate due to their role in stress response regulation. Overall, this study contributes to the understanding of how ACEs shape brain structures and may pave the way for targeted interventions in mental health disorders.

Response 2: The scarcity of meta-analysis studies investigating the correlation between parenting styles and children’s self-esteem highlights the significance of this research area. The review’s focus on authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive parenting styles and their impact on self-esteem provides valuable insights. The connection between parenting styles and children’s self-esteem is well-established, albeit not causal. The meticulous collection of over a thousand studies examining warmth, control, and autonomy’s influence on internalization symptoms enhances the study’s credibility. The distinction between authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles is enlightening, showcasing the differing effects on children’s self-esteem. The observation of longitudinal evidence lends depth to the analysis, shedding light on the lasting impact of parenting styles. This review underscores the importance of warmth, control, and autonomy in fostering positive self-esteem and advocates for authoritative parenting as a means to achieve this outcome.
