Client 1: Jane
Q1. Building a culture of self-advocacy
In my role as a mental health nurse, I explained to Jane the concept of self-advocacy as the practice of speaking up for one’s rights and needs. I emphasized that self-advocacy empowers individuals to actively participate in their care decisions. To role model self-advocacy, I shared stories of other clients who successfully advocated for themselves. I encouraged her to voice her opinions during care planning meetings and decision-making processes, demonstrating that her perspectives were valued. This approach contributed to fostering a culture of self-advocacy within the facility. I empowered Jane by respecting her autonomy and choices, even if they differed from my recommendations. I encouraged her to express her preferences and actively listened to her concerns, promoting her dignity of risk.
Q2. Planning for support
Before providing self-advocacy support, I reviewed the facility’s policies and procedures related to patient rights and advocacy. I discussed Jane’s case with my colleagues to gain insights into her background and needs. I ensured that safety considerations were addressed, especially given her history of anxiety. I collaborated with the team to ensure that resources such as educational materials and community support groups were available to her.
Q3. Supporting clients to identify their self-advocacy needs
I assisted Jane in identifying issues that were relevant to her mental health journey. Through open conversations, I helped her recognize her rights as a patient and understand the services available to her. We worked together to prioritize her needs and set achievable goals. I supported her in expressing her advocacy needs by providing her with guidance on effective communication techniques. We developed a shared understanding of her rights and needs, enhancing her self-awareness.
Q4. Supporting clients to develop self-advocacy skills
I aided Jane in accessing information about mental health interventions and therapy options. Together, we evaluated the pros and cons of different approaches, helping her make informed choices. Collaboratively, we developed a self-advocacy strategy that included voicing her treatment preferences during care team meetings and engaging in open discussions with her therapists. I encouraged her to practice self-advocacy skills by role-playing scenarios and rehearsing how to express her needs assertively.
Q5. Developing and documenting a self-advocacy plan
I worked alongside Jane to document her advocacy needs and developed a clear self-advocacy strategy. We outlined the events and situations where she felt her needs were not being met. I assisted her in identifying potential barriers, such as communication challenges, and suggested strategies to overcome them. We documented her self-advocacy arguments, ensuring that her voice was well-represented in her care plan.
Q6. Following up with clients
After Jane’s self-advocacy experience, I followed up with her to discuss her feelings, the outcomes, and any challenges she encountered. We reflected on her achievements and identified areas for further improvement. I enhanced her self-advocacy skills by providing additional guidance and reaffirming the importance of her involvement in decision-making processes.
Q7. Communication
I used active listening to clarify issues and provided empathetic support to Jane. By engaging in open dialogues, I created a safe space where she felt comfortable sharing her concerns. I collaborated with her to set goals and praised her efforts in speaking up for her needs, modeling effective self-advocacy behavior.
Q8. Workplace skills
I communicated with Jane about safety, ensuring she knew how to contact staff in case of an emergency. I addressed any potential risks related to her anxiety and worked in alignment with the facility’s policies on patient safety and duty of care.
In conclusion, my role as a mental health nurse involved supporting clients like Jane in their self-advocacy journeys. By fostering open communication, empowering them to make informed decisions, and collaborating on self-advocacy strategies, I aimed to enhance their overall well-being and agency in their care.
