The document I chose is about publication bias by Polit and Beck (2020). To summarize, publication bias means when researchers find out the findings are negative, they choose not to publish them. Nair (2019) also discussed the reasons why publication bias occurs which include small sample size, indifferent sample groups, and adverse events in groups (p. 506). This document also indicated strategies to face potential publication bias which include research on unpublished articles, looking for publication bias during the review process, and using statistics to avoid the negative impact of publication review. Polit and Beck (2020) also recommended being in contact with researchers, looking for abstracts at conferences, and reading regulatory and consumer reports can help with researching unpublished articles. A funnel plot, a statistical test, and a sensitivity test can be used to detect publication bias in articles. Lastly, this document also addressed three ways to address publication bias which include a fail-safe number method, an Orwin’s fail-safe method, and a trim-and-fill method (Polit & Beck, 2020).

When conducting the systematic review, I will utilize different databases including the paper ones. To avoid publication bias, I will also research unpublished articles to find how the “insignificant results” can affect my findings. Negative results are still results that can lead my research in another direction. When I put fragmented research words in the search bar, I would also put keywords such as “systematic review” or “metanalysis.” Lastly, I would also use a funnel plot and a fail-safe number method to avoid bias and explore the true values of the systematic reviews that can offer (Polit & Beck, 2021).
