CHCPRP003 Reflect on and improve own professional practice
1. Go through each item in the Graham Gibbs (1998) reflective model, and thoroughly discuss each item. (eg. Gibbs: Description, feelings, evaluation, etc.)
2. You must make up a scenario reflecting as a community support worker role and consult with peers or supervisors when completing this task. Give a brief discussion of who you consulted with, the outcome of those consultations, and how you incorporated the feedback into your reflection in question one above.
3. You must provide feedback to another peer on their work. Briefly summarise feedback you have provided to another and the outcome of that discussion.
4. Assess your work against ethical and legal requirements. Did you meet the requirements or did you feel torn ethically? Give at least one specific example and discuss.
5. Reflect on self-care requirements. Did you give yourself self-care? When and why or why not? Did you require additional support? When would you require additional support in the future if faced with a similar situation?
As a community support worker, reflective practice is an essential aspect of my professional development. In this essay, I will utilize Graham Gibbs’ (1998) reflective model to thoroughly discuss each stage, applying it to a scenario from my role as a community support worker. Additionally, I will detail the consultations with peers and supervisors, the feedback received, and how it informed my reflection. Furthermore, I will assess my work against ethical and legal requirements, identifying a specific example where ethical concerns arose. Finally, I will reflect on self-care requirements and discuss my experiences with self-care and the need for additional support.
Gibbs’ Reflective Model involves six stages: Description, Feelings, Evaluation, Analysis, Conclusion, and Action Plan.
Description: In this stage, I describe the scenario that prompted my reflection. For instance, I encountered a situation where a client with a disability was struggling to access essential services due to communication barriers.
Feelings: Here, I explore my emotions during the incident. I felt empathetic towards the client’s frustration and determined to find a solution that would improve their access to services.
Evaluation: In this phase, I assess the positive and negative aspects of the situation. While I empathized with the client, I acknowledged that I lacked the necessary training to address communication barriers effectively.
Analysis: This stage involves deeper exploration of the situation’s underlying factors. I realized that enhancing my communication skills, particularly with clients who have different communication needs, was crucial.
Conclusion: In the conclusion, I summarize my learning from the reflection. I recognized the importance of continuous professional development to better support clients with diverse needs.
Action Plan: Finally, I develop an action plan to address the identified areas for improvement. I consulted with my supervisor and enrolled in a communication skills training program to enhance my abilities.
I consulted with both my peers and my supervisor during my reflection. My peers provided insights into their experiences with similar situations, helping me gain alternative perspectives. My supervisor supported my decision to enroll in a communication skills training program, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to professional growth.
The feedback from my consultations was instrumental in shaping my reflection. By considering different viewpoints, I became more aware of the potential challenges faced by clients with communication barriers, and I felt more motivated to address these issues effectively.
In providing feedback to a peer, I noted their exemplary communication skills and how they effectively engaged with clients. I commended their ability to adapt to diverse communication needs, contributing to positive outcomes for clients. The peer appreciated the feedback and expressed gratitude for the recognition of their efforts.
During my reflective practice, I encountered an ethical concern related to client confidentiality. While discussing the client’s situation with peers, I realized that I had inadvertently shared more personal information than necessary. I felt torn between upholding the client’s privacy and seeking support and guidance from colleagues.
To address this concern, I approached my supervisor, explaining the situation honestly, and seeking guidance on how to better navigate confidentiality boundaries in discussions with peers. My supervisor provided valuable advice on maintaining client privacy while still seeking support from colleagues when needed. Moving forward, I committed to being more mindful of confidentiality and respecting the trust clients place in me.
During this reflective process, I recognized the importance of self-care to ensure my well-being as a community support worker. I actively practiced self-care by engaging in hobbies, spending time with loved ones, and seeking emotional support from friends and family.
However, there were instances when the workload and emotional demands became overwhelming, and I hesitated to seek additional support for fear of burdening others. In the future, if faced with a similar situation, I would seek additional support, such as professional counseling or debriefing sessions with colleagues, to prevent burnout and maintain my ability to provide effective support to clients.
Reflective practice is a powerful tool for growth and development as a community support worker. By utilizing Gibbs’ Reflective Model, consulting with peers and supervisors, addressing ethical concerns, and embracing self-care, I have gained valuable insights into my professional practice. Continuous learning and self-improvement will remain integral to my role as I strive to better support clients and enhance their quality of life.
