1. “What doesnt kill us makes us stronger” relates to Humanistic and Existential psychology in ways that Existential Psychology believes there is no good or bad. I believe in this case experiences we learn and grow from are not good or bad, or atleast should not be seen as being good or bad. Humanistic, everything we live through is seen as positive because we grow from them. Growing and learning from experiences is good and it benefits us in the long run. Doctor Quote (2021) states that setbacks, pain, and misery only make you stronger if you learn from them for the future. If there is no growth and you learn from them the next setback will hit you even harder. I believe that making mistakes is a part of growth.

“Life must be understood backward; but… it must be lived forward” relates to both Humanistic and Existential Psychology because there is no good or bad from the past, learn and grow from it. Looking back there is no bad, all experiences in the past are good because they shape us to be who we are today. McCallum (2019) states that his favorite speech comes from Steve Jobs, who states “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backward the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.” I agree with this, you cant look at the past as being wrong, but instead as being good, and connecting the dots from experiences is what brings us to be who we are today.

ANSWER

Reflections on Positive Growth and Life Perspective in Psychology

The notion that “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger” resonates with both Humanistic and Existential psychology, drawing on the belief that experiences are not inherently good or bad but opportunities for growth. In the context of Existential Psychology, experiences are viewed without moral judgment, encouraging individuals to learn and evolve from them. Humanistic psychology aligns with this sentiment, as every experience, whether challenging or rewarding, contributes to personal growth. As highlighted by Doctor Quote (2021), setbacks and adversity can strengthen individuals if they learn from them, preventing future setbacks from being more impactful. I share the belief that mistakes and hardships are vital for personal development.

The concept of “Life must be understood backward; but… it must be lived forward” resonates with both Humanistic and Existential Psychology by emphasizing the importance of learning from the past. Looking back, there is no distinct categorization of good or bad experiences; rather, they collectively shape an individual’s journey. Steve Jobs’ wisdom, as cited by McCallum (2019), reinforces this perspective – connecting life’s dots is clearer when looking backward. I agree that reflecting on past experiences allows us to recognize how they led to our present self, providing insight into personal growth and evolution.

The sentiment that “What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger” aligns with Humanistic and Existential psychology, emphasizing the significance of growth through experiences. Existential Psychology’s stance on experiences without moral judgment underscores the potential for learning and development. Similarly, Humanistic psychology views all experiences as contributing to positive growth. The idea that setbacks and challenges lead to strength resonates, as highlighted by Doctor Quote (2021). I concur that embracing mistakes as opportunities for growth is pivotal.

The principle of “Life must be understood backward; but… it must be lived forward” is congruent with Humanistic and Existential Psychology, emphasizing the value of learning from the past. Both perspectives emphasize that past experiences, regardless of their nature, contribute to personal development. The words of Steve Jobs, as quoted by McCallum (2019), emphasize the importance of trusting in life’s journey. This resonates with my belief that understanding the past’s impact is integral to shaping our present selves.
