PICOT Question

QUESTION

The first step of the evidence-based practice process is to evaluate a nursing practice environment to identify a nursing problem in the clinical area. When a nursing problem is discovered, the nurse researcher develops a clinical guiding question to address that nursing practice problem. For this assignment, you will create a clinical guiding question know as a PICOT question. The PICOT question must be relevant to a nursing practice problem. Use the “Literature Evaluation Table” to complete this assignment. Prior to starting the “Literature Evaluation Table,” complete the following: Select a nursing practice problem of interest to use as the focus of your research. Start with the patient population and identify a clinical problem or issue that arises from the patient population. Following the PICOT format, write a PICOT question (diabetes in seniors)in your selected area of interest. The PICOT question should be applicable to your proposed capstone project the project students must complete during their final course in the RN-BSN program of study). Conduct a literature search to locate six research articles focused on your selected nursing practice problem of interest. Note: This literature search should include three quantitative and three qualitative peer-reviewed research articles to support your nursing practice problem.

ANSWER

Creating a well-formed clinical guiding question, known as a PICOT question, is an essential step in the evidence-based practice process. It helps to identify and focus on a specific nursing practice problem for which research evidence is needed. In this assignment, we will develop a PICOT question related to the nursing practice problem of diabetes in seniors and conduct a literature search to find relevant research articles.

The PICOT question for this assignment is as follows: In seniors with diabetes (P), does regular exercise and dietary modifications (I) compared to standard care (C) lead to better glycemic control and reduced complications (O) within a six-month period (T)?

To locate research articles, we will conduct a literature search using databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, and Scopus. The search terms used will include “diabetes,” “seniors,” “exercise,” “dietary modifications,” “glycemic control,” and “complications.” The search will be limited to peer-reviewed research articles published in the last five years to ensure the relevance and currency of the findings.

The literature search will include both quantitative and qualitative research articles to provide a comprehensive understanding of the nursing practice problem. Three quantitative research articles will offer evidence on the effectiveness of exercise and dietary modifications on glycemic control and complications in seniors with diabetes. These articles may involve randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, or systematic reviews/meta-analyses. The quantitative research will provide quantitative data, statistical analysis, and objective measures to evaluate outcomes.

In addition, three qualitative research articles will explore the experiences, perspectives, and lived experiences of seniors with diabetes in implementing exercise and dietary modifications. These articles may employ methods such as interviews, focus groups, or ethnographic observations. The qualitative research will provide rich, in-depth insights into the barriers, facilitators, and subjective experiences related to the nursing practice problem.

By incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research, we can gain a comprehensive understanding of the nursing practice problem of diabetes in seniors. The quantitative research will provide evidence on the effectiveness of interventions, while the qualitative research will help us understand the underlying factors and individual experiences that influence the outcomes.

Through the literature search and evaluation of the identified research articles, we will gather evidence to support or refute the effectiveness of exercise and dietary modifications in improving glycemic control and reducing complications in seniors with diabetes. This evidence will contribute to the development of evidence-based interventions and clinical guidelines that promote optimal care for this vulnerable population.

In conclusion, developing a well-constructed PICOT question and conducting a comprehensive literature search are vital steps in the evidence-based practice process. By focusing on the nursing practice problem of diabetes in seniors and using both quantitative and qualitative research articles, we can gather evidence to inform clinical decision-making and enhance the quality of care provided to this population.
