Minimum Wage and Poverty: State Comparison and Policy Suggestions

QUESTION

I live in the state of Indiana, and mininmum wage is $7.25 and hour. The state and Federal minimun wage is the same so there is not much to compare. If you make $7.25 and hour for a 40 hr work week then you will only make $290.00 a week. As well as yearly minimum being only $15.080.00. Thats really not much at all especially if you’re trying to take care of a family. Minimum wage applies to most, the only exceptions are those with tips, student workersa and other excempt workers. Minimum wage was changed back in 2008, it went up .70 cents, it went from $6.55 to $7.25 an hour. There are some employees that can be paid $4.25 and hour if they’re under 20 years old, during the 90 day period.

Mr. Valez would definitley be considered poverty level. He will not be able to afford child-care making minimun wage. I would tell Mr. Valez to see if he could get a voucher for help with child-crae and for housing since he makes so little! He definitley needs all the help he can get.(AM).

2.State I currently live- North Carolina

Minimum Wage- $7.25

Comparison- they are both the same

Mr. Velez is considered to be below the poverty line with his weekly income

He will not be able to afford the cost of childcare

I think SNAP benefits would help with food so they can eat and he wouldn’t have to come out of pocket for high pricing food. I would also suggest he apply for WIC for his child to receive nutrition. Furthermore, he will not be able to have a home with just that amount of money so I would recommend Section 8 housing so he can pay a proportion of the rent instead of in full.

Minimum Wage and Poverty: State Comparison and Policy Suggestions

Introduction

The discussion focuses on the minimum wage and its impact on poverty levels, specifically examining the states of Indiana and North Carolina. Both states have a minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, which raises concerns about the financial struggles faced by individuals like Mr. Velez, who live on such low wages. This essay will review the information presented by the classmates from Indiana and North Carolina and provide suggestions for policy interventions to alleviate poverty for individuals like Mr. Velez.

Indiana

In Indiana, the minimum wage is set at $7.25 per hour, the same as the federal minimum wage. The classmate correctly points out that earning minimum wage leads to a meager weekly income of $290 and an annual income of $15,080. This income level places Mr. Velez and others in similar situations well below the poverty line, making it challenging to support themselves, let alone their families. The classmate highlights the difficulty of affording childcare on such a limited income.

Suggested Policies for Mr. Velez in Indiana

Increased Minimum Wage: Advocating for an increase in the minimum wage to a livable wage would significantly improve the financial situation of workers like Mr. Velez. A higher minimum wage would reduce the reliance on government assistance and improve overall economic stability.

Affordable Childcare: Access to affordable childcare through government assistance programs or vouchers would ease the burden on low-income families, enabling them to work without worrying about childcare expenses.

Housing Assistance: Expanding housing assistance programs, such as Section 8, would assist individuals like Mr. Velez in finding affordable housing and reduce the risk of homelessness.

North Carolina

North Carolina also maintains a minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, making it challenging for individuals like Mr. Velez to make ends meet. The classmate correctly points out the difficulties faced by low-wage workers in affording childcare and housing with their limited incomes.

Suggested Policies for Mr. Velez in North Carolina

Minimum Wage Increase: Similar to Indiana, advocating for a higher minimum wage in North Carolina would provide workers like Mr. Velez with a more livable income and reduce poverty rates.

Social Safety Net Programs: Expanding access to SNAP benefits and WIC can ensure that Mr. Velez’s family has access to adequate nutrition, alleviating some financial strain.

Affordable Housing Initiatives: Implementing affordable housing initiatives and rental assistance programs can assist families in securing stable housing and reduce the risk of homelessness.

Conclusion

The discussion on minimum wage and its impact on poverty in Indiana and North Carolina highlights the pressing need for policy interventions to support individuals like Mr. Velez. Increasing the minimum wage, providing affordable childcare options, and expanding social safety net programs are essential steps toward alleviating poverty and improving the well-being of low-income families. Policymakers must prioritize these measures to create a more equitable and supportive society for all.
