Journal Article Writing

Each student will become acquainted with the current professional journals and literature in special education by identifying, reading, and responding in writing to the selected research article. The article should represent a topic that is covered in the course. An outline for completing the task is contained below. For grading purposes, the abstract will be assigned a point value and a rubric is provided with specific items identified. Points will be deducted for spelling, grammatical, and typographical errors. Each abstract must include (unless otherwise instructed):

1. Bibliographic citation which conforms to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 6th Ed
2. Statement of the problem, theory, or issue. After writing this part ask yourself; “is the problem clearly stated and to the point?”
3. Procedures discussed. Give a summary of research procedures used and/or theories addressed or developed to resolve the stated problem or issue.
4. Summary, results, conclusions, and recommendations, which are pertinent.
5. Describe your own evaluation and personal reaction to the article, including a statement related to the impact that the information had on you as a future special education professional working with students with disabilities.

Exemplary papers have the following characteristics:

Ideas: The paper is clear and focused. It holds the reader’s attention. Relevant information and details enrich the central theme. Ideas are supported by research, practical knowledge and experience. Conclusions show insight.

Organization: The organizational structure enhances and showcases the central idea or theme of the paper. An inviting introduction draws the reader in; a satisfying conclusion leaves the reader with a sense of closure and resolution. Sequencing is logical and effective. Thoughtful transitions tie parts together. The paper flows so smoothly, the reader hardly thinks about it.

Voice: The writer of this paper speaks directly to the reader in a manner that is individual, compelling, engaging, and has personality.

Sentence Fluency: The writing has an easy flow. Sentences enhance the meaning. Sentences vary in length and structure. The piece has purposeful and varied sentence beginnings.

Conventions: The writer demonstrates a good grasp of standard writing conventions. Spelling is generally correct. The punctuation is accurate. Grammar and usage are correct. Paragraphing tends to be sound. The written product needs very little additional editing.

Content Relevance: The research connected to the particular needs of students in this area. Anyone reading this paper would have no doubt as to your beliefs regarding students and learning.

General APA Guidelines

• Essays should be word-processed, double-spaced) with 1″ margins on all sides. You should use a clear font that is highly readable. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman font.

Include a page header (also known as the “running head”) at the top of every page. Create a page header/running head. Insert page numbers flush right. TITLE OF JOURNAL ARTICLE” in the header flush left using all capital letters. The running head is a shortened version of your paper’s title and cannot exceed 50 characters including spacing and punctuation. Length: Minimum 5 pages including the Title page and References
