International Trade

  1. COMPARE AND CONTRAST ANALYSES Two written analyses, to be done in a team, are required. Each analysis asks you to compare and contrast the paired countries, trade groups or firms. You may choose any two out of five analyses indicated as compare and contrast in the schedule of readings, cases and assignments. At least one written analysis must be done on or before September 30th.

Grades for the written analysis will be assigned based on:

  1. Application of chapter concepts and frameworks to the case
  2. Rigor of analysis
  3. Well thought out arguments and reasoning
  4. Quality, professionalism and clarity of writing

Please keep in mind the following suggestions when writing analyses for this class:

Your analysis must address all three questions (indicated in the outline of the readings) assigned for the specific analysis. A good thumb rule is to make sure to allocate sufficient and equal space for each question response.

Apply the theoretical concepts and frameworks from the chapter associated with the topic indicated for the analysis. Note that for some analyses multiple chapters must be used (for e.g. for Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, please use Chapters 2 and 3). In addition, you may also utilize concepts and frameworks from earlier sessions if relevant.

Cases should be evaluated based on the information in the case. You may use additional research beyond the scope of the case if needed for some compare and contrast elements, but the bulk of the analysis should rely on the information in the case. If you use additional information, please cite the resources used.

These assignments are limited to three pages of discussion (essay style, double spaced, 12 pt font in a Word document) and points will be deducted for not following guidelines. The analysis should not be a summary of the case or a list of issues. In addition to the three pages of discussion, exhibits and tables are permitted. Consider using tables (for e.g. showing similarities and differences) and number crunching (where applicable) to support your discussion. You may use as many exhibits and tables as necessary, but they should be referred to in your three page discussion. Exhibits should not be paragraphs of text.

Provide strong support for your arguments. Make sure that your logic is clear. The purpose of cases is to understand how the concepts and frameworks relate to practical situations. There are no right answers, only good arguments and weak arguments.

Write clearly. Grammar counts. Spelling counts. Writing style counts.

All team members are expected to participate in the preparation of the analysis and will receive the same grade.

The analysis is due by 10 a.m. on the day it is scheduled to be discussed in class (for e.g. if you do GM and Apple it must be submitted by 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, September 2nd).
