Focus – Research Utilization and Evidence Informed Practice
• Explain how you have utilized research utilized in your placement (is it being conducted, critiqued and analyzed, and/or used to guide care)? Provide an example.
• How have you integrated Evidence informed practice into your practicum experiences?
During my clinical placement in a Long-Term Care (LTC) home in Brampton, Ontario, Canada, I have been assigned to a leadership and administrative role under the guidance of the Assistant Director of Care (ADOC), who is also the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) lead. Although direct care is not part of my current responsibilities, research utilization and evidence-informed practice play a significant role in shaping the quality of care and outcomes within the LTC setting. In this essay, I will discuss how I have integrated research utilization and evidence-informed practice into my practicum experiences.
Research utilization involves the application of current evidence in healthcare decision-making and practice. Although my role primarily revolves around leadership and administrative tasks, I actively engage with research findings to inform and improve the quality of care provided within the LTC home.
One example of research utilization is the implementation of best practices in infection prevention and control. As the IPAC lead, the ADOC emphasizes the importance of evidence-based guidelines and protocols. I have been involved in reviewing and analyzing recent research studies and guidelines related to infection control measures specific to the LTC population. By critically appraising the literature and applying the findings, we aim to enhance the implementation of effective strategies to prevent and manage infections within the facility. This includes updating policies, procedures, and staff education based on the most current evidence.
Evidence-informed practice involves integrating the best available evidence, clinical expertise, and resident preferences in decision-making to optimize care. Although I am not directly involved in delivering care, evidence-informed practice is essential in the administrative and leadership aspects of LTC.
In my practicum experiences, evidence-informed practice has been integrated in various ways. For instance, in the realm of quality improvement, I have actively participated in audits and data collection processes. By collecting and analyzing relevant data, we can identify areas of improvement and make informed decisions based on evidence. This includes reviewing indicators such as falls, pressure ulcers, medication errors, and resident satisfaction to drive quality improvement initiatives and enhance resident-centered care.
Moreover, evidence-informed practice has influenced decision-making regarding resource allocation and budgeting. By examining research evidence on best practices and cost-effectiveness, we can make informed choices regarding the allocation of resources to support resident care and meet their evolving needs.
Integrating research utilization and evidence-informed practice is vital in the leadership and administrative roles within LTC settings. By actively engaging with research findings, critically appraising the literature, and applying evidence in decision-making processes, we can enhance the quality of care and outcomes for residents. Through participation in audits, data collection, and analysis, we contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives. Furthermore, evidence-informed practice guides resource allocation, ensuring optimal utilization of resources to meet resident needs. By incorporating research and evidence into our practicum experiences, we foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and improvement within the LTC home, ultimately enhancing resident care and well-being.
