ANSWER

In my role as a senior carer working with older adults in care homes and nursing homes, I have consistently demonstrated the value of “We treat others how we would like to be treated.” I firmly believe in providing compassionate and respectful care to every individual, regardless of their age or cognitive abilities.

An example of how I have embodied this value is through my interactions with residents living with dementia. I understand that they may have limitations in communication and may exhibit challenging behaviors due to their condition. However, I always approach them with patience, empathy, and a person-centered approach. When assisting with activities of daily living, such as feeding or bathing, I make sure to maintain their dignity and privacy. I communicate in a calm and soothing manner, ensuring that I respect their choices and preferences.

I also actively involve them in decision-making whenever possible, even if it’s as simple as choosing their outfit for the day or the type of food they would like to eat. By treating them with kindness and understanding, I aim to create a sense of trust and comfort, which contributes to their overall well-being.

This practice aligns with the core value of treating others as we would like to be treated ourselves. I firmly believe that every individual deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and empathy, regardless of their cognitive abilities.
