1. Identify a community priority and conduct research on this priority. You will be required to identify and
analyse structures and systems that contribute to this community concern. You may like to research a
priority from the following list, or use one that you are currently involved in at your workplace or that
interests you in your local community:
▪ Employment
▪ Housing
▪ Financial support
▪ Access to education and training
▪ Health
▪ Childcare
▪ Domestic violence

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
▪ Alcohol and other drugs
▪ Mental health
▪ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex people
2. Work with at least one community group affected by this community concern to ensure their story is
heard and that you have a common understanding with them by setting goals and developing strategies
to address their priorities. This will involve the following:
Developing public processes by arranging community meetings/gatherings to address their issues
and develop a way forward (this could involve setting up a committee, setting up decision-making
processes or arranging a public voting arrangement/representatives etc)
▪ Establishing common goals and coordinating a cooperative group process
▪ Identifying the talents, strengths, abilities and assets of the community and individuals; and
establishing mechanisms and actions to address these strengths
▪ Showing respect and a commitment to assist them by organising a range of opportunities to facilitate
community participation in addressing the concern
▪ Proactively providing appropriate referrals
▪ Identifying and addressing barriers to moving these private concerns into public action.
Note: It will be at the beginning of this stage in the project you can arrange for your assessor to come out
and observe your participation in the facilitation of a group meeting where you will be involved in ensuring
that individual and groups stories are heard and responded to. Ensure you read the requirements of
Assessment Task 3 before conducting this.
You need to support at least three different activities to facilitate community participation and skills
development. The first activity will be the group meeting which forms the basis of the observation for
Assessment Task 3; the other two could include:
▪ promotional activities
▪ support meetings
▪ community meetings
▪ service delivery
▪ programs
▪ focus groups
▪ any other suitable activity you identify.
Note: you need to demonstrate that you can maintain public processes throughout this project so you
need to ensure that the public processes you develop at the beginning of the project are maintained
throughout. You will write about how you did this throughout the report template.
3. Submit your report template to your assessor. Include any photos, promotional material or other relevant
evidence of your support activities with your report

ANSWER

Facilitating Community Participation to Address a Community Priority: A Case Study

Introduction

This report documents a community-based project aimed at addressing a pressing community concern. The chosen community priority is mental health, particularly among Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) individuals. The objective of this project is to work collaboratively with a community group to identify their needs, set goals, and develop strategies to address mental health challenges faced by LGBTI individuals. The project involves three activities to facilitate community participation, with a focus on maintaining public processes throughout.

Identifying the Community Priority – Mental Health in the LGBTI Community

The research indicates that mental health issues disproportionately affect LGBTI individuals due to various social, cultural, and systemic factors. Discrimination, stigma, and lack of acceptance contribute to elevated rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide among this population. The project seeks to address these mental health challenges through collaborative efforts with the LGBTI community.

Working with the LGBTI Community Group

The first step was to arrange a community meeting to gather insights from the LGBTI community members. During this meeting, their stories were heard, and common goals were established. The group was actively involved in coordinating a cooperative process to address their concerns. Respectful and supportive engagement was maintained, and referrals to appropriate mental health services were provided.

Public processes were implemented throughout the project to ensure transparency and inclusivity. Decision-making processes were designed to involve all community members, and opportunities for participation in various activities were offered to address individual strengths and talents.

Facilitating Community Participation

Activity 1: Group Meeting for Story Sharing and Goal Setting
The initial group meeting allowed individuals to express their experiences with mental health challenges and discuss their needs openly. This meeting was crucial in building trust and a common understanding of the community’s priorities. Individual stories were considered in setting collective goals.

Activity 2: Promotional Workshop for Mental Health Awareness

To increase awareness of mental health issues, a promotional workshop was organized. It included educational sessions on mental health, dispelling myths, and promoting inclusive language and behavior. The workshop aimed to empower community members to be advocates for mental health awareness.

Activity 3: Support Group Sessions for Peer Support
To address isolation and foster a supportive community, regular support group sessions were initiated. These sessions provided a safe space for LGBTI individuals to share experiences, exchange coping strategies, and receive peer support.

 Key Findings and Interpretation

The project revealed that collaborative efforts with the LGBTI community were essential in identifying their specific mental health needs and developing tailored strategies. By facilitating community participation, the project effectively addressed the stigma associated with mental health, encouraging individuals to seek help and support.

Implications

The project’s success highlighted the significance of community-driven approaches to mental health challenges. Engaging community members in decision-making processes fostered a sense of ownership and empowerment. The project’s outcomes have implications for designing inclusive mental health services and policies that prioritize the unique needs of LGBTI individuals.

Limitations and Recommendations

The project faced some limitations, such as time constraints and resource limitations. To address these challenges, future projects could explore partnerships with mental health organizations or secure funding for sustained initiatives.
