Evaluate Match and Design

There are three parts to this assignment.

Part 1. Investigate and evaluate an advanced coursebook using the sample provided.

Part 2.i. Select and exploit an authentic reading or listening text (not a song) for this advanced class:

A mixed-nationality general English class of 15 Advanced C1-C2 adults (9 women, 6 men, ages 20-40 years) living /studying in an English speaking country.

Four of your students have university places for the next academic year and want to improve their fluency in preparation. Two are married to people from the host country – one is at home with a young child, and the other works in a restaurant. Four are work colleagues who have been sent by their company to work in this country for a year. The other five have come on short-term visits specifically to improve their English.

Identify vocabulary you would pre-teach.

2. ii. Design 3 activities to further exploit your selected text after using it for a comprehension lesson: a) a dictionary activity, b) an activity using online resources, c) another follow-up activity.

Part 3. Write an essay on using authentic materials and the internet in language teaching.

GUIDELINES:

1. Download and save all the documents. Do not begin work until you have read all the templates and the Advice.

2. Read Unit 10, Parts 1 and 2 on using coursebooks and online resources. You may find it useful to do some extra research for ideas on using online resources.

3. Read Unit 5, Part 1 and Unit 9, Part 1 on using authentic materials.

4. Read Unit 2, Part 1 on using dictionaries.

5. Use the checklist to ensure you have done everything required before you submit your assignment.

Notes for Part 2

Text: Do not use material found on educational websites, which has already been presented as teaching material. You must demonstrate your own ability to find and exploit authentic materials.

Activities: None of the activities should be on the comprehension of the text you have selected – assume you have already done this.

You can adapt ideas you have found on the Internet or in teachers’ resource books to suit your text if you wish to, but provide a reference if you do this. Do not copy an unadapted activity from another source.
