Enhancing Storytelling through Interactive Props: Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?

QUESTION

I need a little help with a response to these two

A. After reviewing the story Oonga Boonga the Jackdaws I came up with is using a shoe box with various community helpers, a baby bottle, a baby rattle, and a doll baby. This box would be set up in a quiet area in the classroom where children can act out the story using various items from the book. As I was listening to the story, I thought to myself #1 why is baby Louise crying so much? #2 is she hungry or maybe upset. Is she wet? Once her brother walked in and began to say Oonga Boonga she was able to calmed down. But once he left she was upset again? Even though everyone tried to say the something to her it didn’t work. But once again her her came to the rescue, and in  the end it was only his presence she wanted not everyone else. I felt this was a very good on the importance of sibling relationships and caring.

B.To make a Jackdaw for the book “Oonga Boonga” I would use paper, tissue paper, markers, glue, an empty water bottle, and a small cardboard box. I would make simple cut-out music notes to signify when the grandpa was dancing and playing the harmonica to help calm down Louise. The empty water bottle signifies Louise’s bottle. I would create  picture of the brother to show the importance and significance of her brother and of him figuring out a way to stop Louise from crying. When the family tried saying “Oonga Boonga”, it didn’t work. But when her brother would say it, she would stop crying. While watching and listening to this story, it is noticeable that she has a strong relationship with her brother and loves him. When she is upset, he is the only one from the family that can calm her down.

C.  After reviewing and listening to the story of “Oonga Boonga” by Fried Wishinsky. The Items I would choose are Pictures of families, Baby dolls, toys, a Cd player for music, a harmonica, and stuffed animals. I would make a paper airplane. I chose these items because the story was about family but mainly about the baby that would not stop crying.

I choose the book Brown Bear Brown Bear. What Do You See? By Bill Martin Jr The Items I would use for this story would be A big stuffed bear, and I would have some other stuffed or plastic animals in the story. I would get some grass from outside. I would use people puppets, and I would also have some glasses and wiggly eyes. I would lay all the items on a table along with the book so the children could set it up how they would tell the story. I did this

ANSWER

Enhancing Storytelling through Interactive Props: Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Introduction

Storytelling is a powerful tool in early childhood education, fostering imagination, language development, and cognitive skills in young learners. Using interactive props can further enhance the storytelling experience, allowing children to actively engage with the narrative and explore their creativity. For the book “Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?” by Bill Martin Jr., I have selected a range of props that will encourage children’s participation and bring the story to life.

Stuffed Animals and Grass

To set the scene for “Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?”, I would place a big stuffed bear as the central character. Alongside it, I would place other stuffed or plastic animals, like a blue horse, a red bird, a yellow duck, and others, representing the various animals in the book. Additionally, I would gather some grass from outside to mimic the natural environment, enhancing the sensory experience for the children.

People Puppets and Wiggly Eyes

To represent the different characters in the story, I would include people puppets that the children can use to act out the roles of the teacher and the animals. The addition of wiggly eyes can add a touch of whimsy, allowing the children to animate the characters and make the storytelling more playful and interactive.

 Glasses

In “Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?”, the teacher wears glasses. Including a pair of glasses in the props will enable the children to role-play the teacher, taking on the character and engaging with the story from a new perspective.

 CD Player and Music

Music can add depth and rhythm to storytelling. I would include a CD player with the book’s corresponding audio, so the children can listen to the melodic narration and follow along with the words. The music will create a dynamic atmosphere, enhancing the storytelling experience and encouraging children to participate actively in retelling the story.

Conclusion

Incorporating interactive props like stuffed animals, grass, people puppets, wiggly eyes, glasses, and music can elevate the storytelling experience for young learners engaging with “Brown Bear Brown Bear, What Do You See?” These props encourage active participation, imaginative play, and language development. By offering children the opportunity to interact with the story using their senses and creativity, they can develop a deeper understanding of the narrative, make personal connections, and build essential early literacy skills. As educators, using props and interactive elements in storytelling can inspire a love for reading and learning, setting the foundation for a lifelong passion for literature.
