I chose an article from the Journal of Nursing Practice and Reviews of Research. The article, Bedside Shift Report Enhances Patient Satisfaction for Hispanic and Public Insurance Patients and Improves Visibility of Leadership in Obstetric and Postpartum Settings, discusses comparisons of Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) before the bedside shift report was implemented and after its implementation. The problem with the study was that the relationship between bedside shift reports and patient satisfaction in an obstetric patient population had yet to be examined (Elue et al., 2019). They conducted the study to examine the association between bedside shift reports and patient satisfaction scores in obstetric and postpartum women as measured by HCAHPS scores during a unit-wide transition to bedside shift report (Elue et al., 2019, p. 4).

The study population was broken down into two groups: pre-bedside shift (October 14, 2017-January 14, 2018) report and post-bedside shift report (January 15, 2018-April 15, 2018) (Elue et al., 2019, p. 6). All postpartum women, 18 years or older, who were discharged between October 2017 to April 2018 and completed the HCAHPS survey were included (Elue et al., 2019, p. 6). Convenience sampling is how the subject population was chosen. They sent the HCAHPS surveys to all patients, and the study determined all patients 18 years and older within a specified time frame for this study who responded.

They collected the data through HCAHPS surveys between October 14, 2017 to April 15, 2018. Questions on the HCAHPS surveys regard care from the nurses and the overall rating of the hospital. The data was analyzed by taking the patient satisfaction scores from a 6-month interval and dividing them into three months before implementation and three months after implementation of the bedside shift report (Elue et al., 2019). A total of 289 patients responded to the survey, 146 in the pre-bedside shift report group and 143 in the post-bedside shift report group (Elue et al., 2019). Most survey respondents were Caucasian, with only 3.5% of Hispanic patients responding to pre-bedside shift reports and 5% responding to post-bedside shift report.

The study found that Hispanic women had higher satisfaction scores than non-Hispanic women after the implantation of bedside shift reports (Elue et al., 2019, p. 9). They could not measure a significant difference in nurse care pre and post-bedside shift report implementation (Elue et al., 2019). They thought this to be because of overall high patient satisfaction before implementing bedside shift reports. Overall, the study found bedside shift reports among obstetric and postpartum women to be effective and increase patient satisfaction (Elue et al., 2019). They reported that the benefits of bedside shift report higher than negative outcomes; patients feel safer with bedside shift report as it causes fewer inaccuracies in their care, thus increasing patient satisfaction (Bressan et al., 2019).

ANSWER

Enhancing Patient Satisfaction Through Bedside Shift Reports in Obstetric Settings

In the article, “Bedside Shift Report Enhances Patient Satisfaction for Hispanic and Public Insurance Patients and Improves Visibility of Leadership in Obstetric and Postpartum Settings,” Elue et al. (2019) conducted a study to explore the impact of implementing bedside shift reports on patient satisfaction in obstetric and postpartum settings, particularly focusing on Hispanic and public insurance patients. The study addressed a critical gap in the literature, as the relationship between bedside shift reports and patient satisfaction in obstetric populations had not been extensively examined.

The research methodology employed in the study involved a comparison of Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores before and after the implementation of bedside shift reports. The study population was divided into two groups: pre-bedside shift report (October 14, 2017, to January 14, 2018) and post-bedside shift report (January 15, 2018, to April 15, 2018). All postpartum women aged 18 or older who were discharged during this timeframe and completed the HCAHPS survey were included, with convenience sampling being the method of subject population selection.

The primary data collection was based on HCAHPS surveys administered between the specified dates. These surveys focused on questions related to care received from nurses and the overall rating of the hospital. The data was analyzed by comparing patient satisfaction scores for a 6-month interval, dividing them into three months before the implementation of bedside shift reports and three months after. A total of 289 patients participated in the survey, with 146 in the pre-bedside shift report group and 143 in the post-bedside shift report group. The majority of survey respondents were Caucasian, with only 3.5% of Hispanic patients in the pre-bedside shift report group and 5% in the post-bedside shift report group.

One of the key findings of the study was that Hispanic women demonstrated higher satisfaction scores than non-Hispanic women after the implementation of bedside shift reports. However, the study could not identify a significant difference in nurse care quality before and after the implementation of bedside shift reports. This might be attributed to the generally high patient satisfaction levels observed before the introduction of bedside shift reports.

Overall, the study indicated that bedside shift reports in obstetric and postpartum settings were effective in enhancing patient satisfaction. It was noted that the benefits of implementing bedside shift reports outweighed any potential negative outcomes. Patients reported feeling safer with bedside shift reports, leading to fewer inaccuracies in their care and ultimately increasing overall patient satisfaction (Bressan et al., 2019).

This research is significant in highlighting the potential benefits of implementing bedside shift reports, particularly in the obstetric and postpartum settings, which have not been extensively studied in this context. It emphasizes the importance of considering the unique needs of different patient populations, such as Hispanic and public insurance patients, in healthcare delivery. By promoting open communication and providing a platform for patients to actively participate in their care, bedside shift reports can contribute to improved patient satisfaction and overall quality of care.
