DISCUSSION 2 the traditional family that is described during the 1930s and 40s consisted of “an average American household consisted of two breadwinners, viz. the husband and the wife” (Mlblevins, 2009, Gender bias and the standard family setup). The family structure during the 1950’s focused on a secure life. However, even in these years there existed two opposing viewpoints. One of which the husband and wife share the responsibility of the household and one in which the husband works, and the wife stays at home. For this discussion I have chosen to focus on single parenting. This is an issue that I can personally relate to as I have spent the last five years raising my daughter on my own. Thankfully, in society today there is not as much stigma as was associated back in the early 1900’s. It hasn’t always been easy however, for a mother to raise a child when it is conceived out of wedlock.
Today approximately forty percent of children throughout the United States are born to single mothers (Psychology Today, n.d.). However, in the 1950’s there was a stigma that was not positive, surrounding single mothers or children being born out of wedlock. In these years before the invention of birth control when it was still illegal to have an abortion which was also very dangerous as “more women died of illegal abortions than the number of Americans who died in Viet Nam” (Psychology Today, n.d.). There was also shame and consequences that surrounded this topic. Many women were disowned from families and rejected by their communities’ weather that be from their churches or just the family.
Although a family living with a single parent, or a child living with two parents who are not married has risen over the years, specifically in the 1960’s increasing from 9% to 26%. The number of births occurring outside of marriage also increased eightfold to a percentage of forty following the standards occurring in the 1950’s. Today there have been changes that surround being a single parent, “Many of the changes that were part of this transition are a direct result of the expanding role of women in society, both in terms of the workplace and education” (Mccumber, 2020, The Modern family unit). There have also been a number of changes such as the number of women that are comprised of the work force which have put women “on equal footing with men when it comes to working outside the home” thus making them able to support their children since they are working and able to get positions that allow them to take care of themselves and their children (Mccumber, 2020, The Modern family unit). Due to the change in women’s roles in society there have been changes that support them having children outside of wedlock. Throughout the years it has also become part of the norm for modern family units to include “single-parent families headed by mothers, families formed through remarriage, and empty-nest families” (Mccumber, 2020, The Modern family unit). Other changes that have occurred are the number of women that stay at home full-time, “In the late 1960s, about half of mothers with children younger than 18 stayed at home full-time, compared with only three-in-ten today. (About 7% of fathers who live with their kids are stay-at-home dadsLinks to an external site..)” (Livingston, 2015, para. 5).
