A LOT of students worry about the information in higher education and having to address research that challenges many moral stances of a Christian Worldview. I wanted to take some time to help with this, as it is an important challenge not to simply “brush over”. This is going to be a bit long-winded, but it is important.

That being said, we can’t deny that there are many people in the world who think differently than us (and society is changing rapidly). Even if we don’t agree with the moral practice of certain things, we need to be well informed about the perspectives that others have.

This information has the potential to help you in your own ministry as you meet people who may identify as different genders, sexual orientations, different worldviews, etc. The course material isn’t to convince you about the moral stance on such topics, but instead make you aware of the information and knowledge. How can you love and minister to all of God’s children if you do not understand what they are talking about when these various topics come up? One of my favorite quotes is from Aristotle, saying it is the mark of an educated mind to entertain an idea without accepting it. Learning about these topics does not mean accepting them, but it is meant to help you be more informed about the world you are living in.

Yes, our GCU community has strong Christian values, but we are also an accredited institute of higher education and not a seminary school so it is really important that we expose our students to information that is out there in the world even when it may challenge their own Christian worldviews. If we did not do this, GCU could not be a fully accredited institution of higher education, and your degree would not be worthless in the professional world.

This is actually one of the defining characteristics of higher education and the biggest difference between those who do not have a college level education and those of us (and you, too, soon!) who do have a college level education- the ability to take information that is new that you may not agree with and think critically about it. I hope that you each accept this challenge, as this type of situation will very likely arise again at some point in your education where you have challenging information you have to think critically about.
