a. From 0:00-0:47 the camera is positioned on the west side of the north beach and is pointed northeast. Pause the video and look around. Describe what you see and what you hear. How does this part of the video make you feel?

While the video is paused, look around so you know exactly where you are on the island. Using Google Earth add a placemark (with a relevant name) of where you think the camera was positioned. Take a screenshot of the map (and placemarks include those below) and add it to this report. Click HERE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtJ3o1fdmrQ) to find out how to add a placemark in Google Earth.

b. From 0:48-3:18 the camera is positioned in the middle of the north beach. Follow the instructions above to make a placemark of where you think the camera was positioned during this section of the video. Look around the bay and the beach. How do you think the conditions in the Bay compare to the conditions when Koh Sak experienced mass tourism? COVID-19 has drastically reduced the number of visitors to the island and its reefs; what do you think this means for the coral reef?

To understand what the island was like when it experienced mass tourism read the papers HERE (https://ph02.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/ennrj/article/view/83867) and HERE (https://ph01.tci-thaijo.org/index.php/aer/article/view/94588) and look at the satellite photos of Google Maps (HERE (https://goo.gl/maps/3BMFjJkfrME4q3tf7) – zoom in) for a comparison.

c. From 5:44 the camera is positioned on the south beach facing west. Pause the video and look around. Using Google Earth add a placemark (with a relevant name) of where you think the camera was positioned. Describe any differences between the north and south beach. Which beach do you prefer? North or South? Please explain your preference.

As you watch the video keep in mind that the reef is an “in-shore, turbid reef” because of its proximity to the terrestrial inputs brought into the Bay of Bangkok via the Chao Phraya river (and its distributary, the Tha Chin river); the Mae Klong; and the Bang Pakong river. This influences the biophysical and biochemical properties of the water and in turn, the reef community.

a. From the video identify three different species of fish and describe their functional role and ecological significance within the reef. What does the academic literature have to say about the three species you identified? Using their scientific names skim the first ten results of a 2021 Google Scholar search – how would you characterise the research?

b. Include in your report a screenshot of the following species (you will have to search for them) with a brief description of their functional role and ecological significance

i. cushion star (Culcita novaeguineae)

ii. mushroom coral (Fungia spp)

iii. boring clam (Tridacna crocea).
