Digital Systems Design

Project Specification:

Design, simulate and implement into FPGA a temperature measurement system. The software suite to be used for synthesis, implementation and analysis of the produced VHDL designs is VIVADO targeting the XC7A100T- 1CSG324C device (Nexys-A7 development board).

Assignment Information:

The design of the system is to be done in 2 stages:

Stage 1:
A. Check the functionality of the LEDs and the switches

Using VHDL code design a digital system that reads the switchers’ status (on/off) and displays the value on the corresponding LED (above the switch).

1. Numerical system convertor

Produce the VHDL code that reads the binary value set by the switchers, calculates its two’s complement and displays it on the seven segments display.

Amend the converter to read the binary number set by the switchers and display factionary numbers with 4 decimal points accuracy on the 7segment.

Create appropriate test benches, simulate the code.

Stage 2: Read and display the temperature sensor value

Design a system that reads the ADT7420 sensor value over the I2C bus and return a 13-bit twos complement word representing the temperature in Celsius with an accuracy of 0.0625°C. Display the value on the 7-segment display.

Based on the code produced, write a report to explain the design process and the overall functionality of the code. Add code snippets and board pictures to support your description and demonstrate the functionality of the system. Explain the algorithms used. Evaluate the resources used to implement the system in FPGA.
