The goal of this essay/podcast is two-fold: to describe a culture (or cultures) that you consider your own; and to analyze common communication practices (verbal & non-verbal) that are part of that culture.
To describe a culture (cultures) that you consider your own, first, think about how the group that you have chosen qualifies as a culture. Does it have shared values/beliefs, history, traditions, patterns of behavior? Make a list. While describing certain history, traditions and customs, tell us what beliefs and values they stand for. This is where you can draw on Hofstede’s six dimensions of culture. Please note that not everything is a culture. To qualify as a culture, a group must share history (even if brief), values/beliefs, traditions/customs, language (or lingo), and patterns of behavior (including communication). Make sure to identify 3-4 components of a culture (ex. shared traditions, history, language, beliefs) and discuss their meaning and importance to the members of your culture. What values do those elements of culture represent for members of your community? What do they stand for?
After you describe your culture, its elements, and core values and beliefs, think about specific observable communication norms/practices/rituals that are part of that culture. What do people do when they interact with one another? Are there any specific verbal and non-verbal behaviors that are considered a norm? Perhaps there is a specific greeting that you are expected to use? Do you also use certain gestures with it? What are the norms and conventions associated with the use of personal space? Is your culture high- or low-context? Think of celebrations and key events: what are some rituals that are “a must”? Make sure to describe 3 specific communication practices clearly and illustrate them with specific examples.
Key requirement: throughout your essay/podcast, please utilize 3 different concepts from the textbook (from chapters 1, 2, 6, or 3). The use of a concept must be context-appropriate and show your understanding of it. While utilizing a concept in writing, please highlight it by making it bold or by providing a footnote at the bottom of the page. When I read/listen to your work, I should be able to identify the 3 concepts easily. You do not need to cite any secondary sources (there is no need to cite your textbook either) unless you interview/cite a person who was important for your identity formation/culture. You do not need to worry about formatting requirements as long as your essay/transcript is 2-3 pages long (double space) and font size 11-12. Please avoid adding extra space between paragraphs.
In terms of style, think of this essay/podcast as a story that could go on your blog/podcast. Your writing/speaking style can be semi-formal, as long as the content of your essay/podcast has substance and good flow/structure. In other words, your writing has to be clear and make sense.
