It offers the reader a framework or theory in which to understand something not in isolation, but in relation to broader cultural, scientific, or otherwise intellectual ways of knowing and engaging the world by building on the work of previous thinkers. That means coming to terms with what is already known (or thought to be known) about a topic, then exploring a complexity, contradiction, or overlooked possibility you’ve observed in the conversation around it.
Your essay of ~2000 words will be written for a scholarly audience, such as the readers of an academic journal, so your rhetorical and stylistic choices should reflect that. Working with the sources from your annotated bibliography in direct ways — ie, coming to terms, forwarding, and countering — will be essential. I expect three or so of those texts to be your “lead” sources, the ones that offer key lenses or framing theories onto your topic, while the other texts serve as “supporting” sources, from which you draw in more isolated or illustrative ways. Please follow MLA guidelines for both citation and essay formatting. Your works cited page for the essay does not need to include annotations.
