I believe hospitals do not always benefit from discharging patients early because it can lead to longer recovery times. Patients can also experience complications due to the illness or surgery they have undergone. If a patient has to be reemitted, this will lead to higher costs for the hospital. My grandfather just had knee replacement surgery and was discharged the next day. He is in his 80’s and I thought this was very soon with little information being sent home with him. Sure enough, he fell and ended up back in the hospital for a month with a broken back. This was poor patient care for him. I feel reimbursement to healthcare providers should be less when a situation like this occurs. I know it did not look very good for the surgeon in this case.
