After taking the assertiveness self-assessment test in Chapter 8, I agree with my results, it scored me as a person to be highly assertive. The job that I do for the Navy involves me strapping myself into a multimillion-dollar helicopter and putting my life in the hands of two pilots. I entrust my pilots to land the aircraft safely on deck every time they put air under the tires. I entrust them with using Crew Resource Management (CRM) and one of the seven skills of CRM is assertiveness. The definition of assertiveness that I abide by from my Naval Air Training and Operating Procedures Standardization Naval Flight Manual is:
19.3.2 Assertiveness
Assertiveness refers to the ability, willingness, and readiness to take action, including making decisions, demonstrating initiative and the courage to act, and stating and maintaining your position until convinced otherwise by the facts.
Assertive behaviors include providing relevant information without being asked, making suggestions, asking questions as necessary, confronting ambiguities, maintaining a position when challenged, stating opinions on decisions or procedures, and refusing an unreasonable request. Assertive statements typically use active verbs or recommend an action. To create an assertive statement, get the attention of the receiver, state your concern, offer a solution, and ask for feedback. Flightcrewmembers must be willing to act assertively if they are going to fulfill their responsibility toward mission success.
Having over 1,500 of flight time, there have been a lot of times when I have had to be assertive because the lives of my crew were on the line. “Assertiveness affect almost all facets of life. People who acquire this skill have less conflict, less stress, therefore, they meet their needs and help others to meet theirs as wall, and also have strong relationships that they can rely on. All these lead to a better mental state and a substantially improved health” (Pipas et al., 2010). In my opinion, it is better to be aggressive because it allows everyone to know how you view and feel about a situation. There are appropriate times when we need to present our tones in a nonaggressive manner; however, when peoples safety is involved, it is necessary to get your point across.
