Analysis of an Infamously Bad Leader: Adolf Hitler

QUESTION

For this discussion , you will be choosing an infamously bad leader from history, television, or one of your favorite movies. “Bad” here is defined broadly. Perhaps the leader was a good person, but failed at his or her job. Or perhaps this person was bad in some other way. Some examples include Mussolini, Mr. Burns from The Simpsons, or Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers movies. You can be as creative as you like; I want students to have fun and/or get engaged with this activity. Just keep in mind that your goal is to be able to apply the material from class. If you have trouble doing so, you may want to choose another example.

After you choose your leader, pull together an analysis answering the following questions:

  1. In a short paragraph, name the leader & briefly describe why that person is infamous or bad: (a) Who was this person? (b) What/who was this person a leader of? (c) What were some of this leader’s goals? (d) What did this leader do that made him or her infamous or bad? Note: Remember to cite your source. If you found information online, provide the URL.
  2. What traits did this person demonstrate? How do these compare to the traits mentioned in the text (see lesson and textbook pages 427-430)? Note: traits are manifested via behavior, so you will need to describe what trait they possessed and give evidence of that trait by describing a behavior.
  3. What behaviors did the leader exhibit? Compare these to the behavioral approach in the text (see lesson and textbook pages 430-431) and/or descriptions of the dark side of leadership (pages 446-448 in your text).
  4. Which bases of power did the leader rely on (see lesson and textbook pages 431-433)? Give examples.
  5. Consider and briefly describe one goal that leader held. The goal does not have to be one you agree with or feel is a correct/good goal to have (e.g., one of Hitler’s goals was ethnic purification).
  6. Provide recommendations about what the leader could have done differently to be more effective in accomplishing that goal using one of the theories below.
  • Contingency Approach
  • Leader Member Exchange
  • Full-Range (i.e., Transformational) Leadership Theory
  • Authentic Leadership
  • Servant Leadership
  • Implicit Leadership Theory
  • Substitutes for Leadership
  • Strategic Leadership

ANSWER

Analysis of an Infamously Bad Leader: Adolf Hitler

Adolf Hitler, one of the most infamous leaders in history, led Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. He is notorious for his role in the Holocaust, the Second World War, and the atrocities committed under his leadership. His leadership was characterized by authoritarianism, nationalism, and a pursuit of racial purity.

Name and Brief Description of the Leader: Adolf Hitler was the leader of Nazi Germany and served as the Chancellor and later the dictator. He sought to establish a totalitarian regime with the goal of achieving Aryan racial purity. His actions included launching World War II and orchestrating the genocide of six million Jews during the Holocaust. Traits Demonstrated and Comparison to Text: Hitler displayed several traits such as authoritarianism, charisma, and narcissism. His authoritarianism is evident through his dictatorial rule and the suppression of dissent. His charisma allowed him to mobilize masses and maintain public support despite his brutal policies. Narcissism is visible in his grandiose self-image and belief in Aryan superiority, which fueled his expansionist ambitions. These traits align with those discussed in the textbook, such as charisma (p. 427) and narcissism (p. 428).

Behaviors Exhibited and Comparison to Behavioral Approach: Hitler’s behaviors included aggressive territorial expansion, propaganda to manipulate public opinion, and ruthless purges within the Nazi party. These actions align with the behavioral approach described in the textbook. His aggressive expansionism and propaganda tactics demonstrate a focus on task-oriented behaviors (p. 431), while his purges and authoritarian control reflect a directive leadership style (p. 431). Furthermore, his brutal actions and disregard for human rights are consistent with the dark side of leadership (pp. 446-448).

Bases of Power Relied On: Hitler relied on multiple bases of power, including coercive power through the use of terror and force, legitimate power by holding the position of Chancellor and consolidating power, and referent power, using charisma and propaganda to gain the support of the German people.

Goal Held by the Leader: One of Hitler’s primary goals was to achieve Aryan racial purity by eliminating what he considered undesirable elements through the Holocaust. While this goal is morally reprehensible, it was a central objective of his leadership.

Recommendations for Effective Leadership Using a Theoretical Approach: Considering Hitler’s goal of achieving Aryan racial purity, one could explore the Contingency Approach. In this approach, leaders should adapt their leadership style to the specific situation. Hitler could have considered alternatives to genocide and ethnic cleansing to achieve his objectives. He might have pursued diplomatic negotiations, social integration, and economic development, which could have achieved greater long-term stability and harmony in Europe. By acknowledging the limitations of his ideology and seeking peaceful solutions, Hitler could have avoided the devastating consequences of World War II and the Holocaust.

While this approach is highly hypothetical and not meant to justify Hitler’s actions, it highlights the importance of considering alternative, less harmful strategies to achieve even the most contentious goals. In this case, transformational leadership, emphasizing collaboration, tolerance, and diplomacy, could have been a more effective path to influence and change.
