Consider a population health topic that rises to the presidential agenda level. Which social determinant most affects this health issue? How did two recent presidents handle the problem? What would you do differently?
I have chosen the pandemic health issue because not only it rises to the presidential level but also involved both administrations with former president trump and current president Biden. I personally was impacted by the pandemic because my 2 daughters were in school and as everything shifted during the pandemic progression and took a strong hold on the American population, from mandatory lockdowns to home schooling my family and I felt the effects of it in our everyday lives. The SDOH that most affected Covid-19 were individuals that had lower educational levels and that were experiencing financial insecurity, also older age, speaking language that is not English, being employed or retired, religious affiliation was all associated with higher risk of Covid-19 infection. In my opinion I believe that the Trump administration mishandled the pandemic. When he was in power the way he changed his opinion on how impactful the pandemic was going to be it brought many concerns to my mind. In the beginning we all did not know how was going to affect our lives but as the virus spread and start the kill thousands of Americans, infecting many of our friends, loved ones in our families I noticed how the president was changing his approach to the whole situation. As an example I like to mention a few of trump’s responses to the coronavirus beginning when he disbanded the white house pandemic response team, the CDC epidemiologist department embedded in China departure from its post soon after eliminated by the trump administration then it all shifted as he stated on a Washington Post interview “this virus its more deadly than even your strenuous flu…This is deadly stuff” to days later statement “Looks like by April, you know in theory when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away”. In my opinion I would have handled much different by handling issues in house, as the pandemic progressed, I would addressed each development separably because the unknown of the whole issue. Now moving to the current Biden’s administration which I believe it has handled not that much better, but it had to deal with the challenge of the virus curves like its mutation, the loss of American people trust, the nascent Covid-19 vaccination severe supply constraints. Biden administration made huge strides in expanding vaccine supply and access which resulted in 500 million Covid-19 vaccine doses administered in Biden’s first year in office were 75% of the U.S. population having had at least one dose, I believe to contain and treat this type of virus the vaccine plays a enormous role. On the current administration I probably would not handled much different because of all the baggage inherited by the previous administration even knowing I am not involved in politics and that I don’t have a preferred party I think they have done an acceptable job on the pandemic situation so far.
The COVID-19 pandemic emerged as a global health crisis that demanded swift and effective responses from leadership, including the U.S. presidential administrations. This essay examines how two recent presidents, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, handled the pandemic, focusing on the social determinant that most affected the health issue. It also delves into potential alternative approaches that could have been taken and evaluates the effectiveness of each administration’s response.
The pandemic’s impact was disproportionately felt by individuals with lower educational levels and those experiencing financial insecurity. Age, linguistic barriers, employment status, and religious affiliation also played significant roles in increasing the risk of COVID-19 infection. These social determinants collectively created an environment where marginalized populations were more vulnerable to the virus’s effects.
The Trump administration faced criticism for its handling of the pandemic. The shifting stance on the virus’s severity and contradictory statements led to uncertainty and undermined public trust. Decisions such as disbanding the White House pandemic response team and reducing CDC resources hindered a cohesive and effective approach to managing the crisis. These actions ultimately impacted the perception of the administration’s commitment to public health and safety.
An alternative approach could have involved a more consistent and informed strategy that adapts as new information emerges. Focusing on a step-by-step response, addressing each phase of the pandemic with tailored interventions, could have helped mitigate the confusion and uncertainty that prevailed during the early stages.
The Biden administration inherited a complex situation but made significant strides in addressing the pandemic. Expanding vaccine supply and access led to a substantial increase in vaccinations, benefiting a significant portion of the U.S. population. While challenges such as vaccine distribution and the emergence of new variants persisted, the administration’s commitment to science-based decision-making and an emphasis on vaccine rollout contributed to positive outcomes.
Comparatively, the Biden administration’s approach seems more focused and transparent than its predecessor’s. The dedication to expanding vaccine access has proven instrumental in curbing the virus’s spread. While hindsight is 20/20, the challenges inherited by the Biden administration limit the extent to which drastic changes could have been implemented. Acknowledging the complexity of the situation and the balance between public health and economic concerns is crucial when evaluating the efficacy of pandemic responses.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical role that presidential leadership plays in managing health crises. While the Trump administration grappled with consistency and clear communication, the Biden administration emphasized science and vaccination campaigns. The multifaceted nature of the pandemic, coupled with inherited challenges, underscores the intricacies of pandemic response. Moving forward, a collaborative approach between leadership, healthcare experts, and the public remains essential to effectively navigate similar health crises in the future.
