Program needs

Children and adolescents who have experienced trauma(s) will come with unique circumstances and similar yet different needs when it comes to treatment planning and interventions. There is much research that goes into treating children and adolescents with traumatic experiences and symptoms of PTSD, from coordinating the most effective trauma-focused psychotherapies and other interventions and collaborating with medical professionals for treating symptoms that are more severe and do not respond to the interventions put in place. Therefore, one of the biggest needs is ensuring that a collaborative team/staff is put in place with the proper training, education, and credentials to help play their part in encouraging positive change in these children and adolescents’ lives. These populations will come from various cultures and lifestyles; therefore, staff needs to be trained in multicultural competence.

The next need falls into the importance of building a firm foundation to allow strong therapeutic relationships/alliances to form and steadily grow. The need for an effective, safe space with quiet room/areas for individual and group sessions, furniture and decoration that can be appropriate and both comforting/welcoming for youth and their supporting families, up-to-date technology for activities, and outside space to conduct outdoor mindfulness activities. The location is crucial when fostering the growth of these relationships, so it is important that the program’s building is not somewhere very busy and noisy and has enough land and nature to conduct outdoor activities for the youth.

It will be necessary to take inventory and document materials for session rooms, technology, equipment for activities, and psychoeducational events for family/client growth, along with supplies for session/activity work to ensure enough resources are available and in place. Record handling for each individual client and their respective family/support will be obtained from general background information, medical and mental health history, and personal information to build profiles, and face-to-face/virtual interviews will be held to ensure that staff is aware and familiarized with each case to offer the best accommodations.

According to (Chien & Lau, 2023), qualitative methods have been used to shape interventions for children who have experienced trauma, and research tends to cover parent perspectives more often. However, it is essential that these qualitative semi-structured interviews will intend to explore the child or adolescent own perspective of their traumatic experience to paint a clearer picture of the program’s focus. The ACA Code of Ethics (2014) discusses how, when conducting assessments, counselors must consider “personal and cultural context” while understanding how culture shapes individual problems such as trauma and how they experience stressful event(s).
