The article, “Registered nurses’ perceptions on the factors affecting nursing shortage in the Republic of Vanuatu Hospitals: a Adel Tutuo Tamata, Masoud Mohammadnezhad, & Ledua Tamani” (2021) gathered information on the experiences with Registered nurses (RN’s) and their thought on the factors that are affecting the nursing shortages in their areas. An open ended questionnaire was provided to 25 RN’s who answered truthfully and anonymously, the information captured through the face to face interview based on the questionnaire was transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Thematic analysis focused on common themes amongst the respondents and grouped like answers together to be data points. based on the common themes amongst the 25 RN’s they described heavy workloads, with the current number of nurses available the workload of direct patient care needed always exceeds available staff int he medical ward. this challenge was due to staffing issues, not enough nursing staff who are employed are assigned to the necessary work shifts. This increased workload took from other administrtive tasks that RN’s are responsible for in addition to caring for patients. There is data availabe to show where the pan points for nursing are now even after the pandemic has reduced the patient
Nursing shortages are a global concern, impacting healthcare systems and patient care quality. The Republic of Vanuatu, like many other nations, faces challenges related to nursing shortages. In 2021, a study titled “Registered Nurses’ Perceptions on the Factors Affecting Nursing Shortage in the Republic of Vanuatu Hospitals” by Adel Tutuo Tamata, Masoud Mohammadnezhad, and Ledua Tamani aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of registered nurses (RNs) regarding the factors contributing to nursing shortages in Vanuatu’s hospitals. This essay provides an overview of the study’s methodology, key findings, and the implications for addressing nursing shortages in the region.
The study employed qualitative research methods to gather insights from 25 RNs working in Vanuatu hospitals. An open-ended questionnaire was designed to capture the RNs’ experiences and perceptions related to nursing shortages. These RNs participated in face-to-face interviews based on the questionnaire, ensuring anonymity and encouraging honest responses. The transcribed interview data were then subjected to thematic analysis, focusing on identifying common themes and grouping similar responses.
Thematic analysis of the RNs’ responses revealed several common themes that shed light on the factors contributing to nursing shortages in Vanuatu hospitals:
Heavy Workloads: RNs consistently described their heavy workloads as a significant challenge. Despite their dedication to providing quality patient care, the current nurse-to-patient ratio often results in excessive workloads. This imbalance leads to the overburdening of RNs, making it challenging to provide comprehensive care.
Staffing Issues: A root cause of the heavy workloads identified by RNs was staffing issues. The study found that there simply aren’t enough nursing staff employed to meet the demands of the medical wards. The lack of adequate staffing contributes directly to increased workloads and compromises patient care quality.
Administrative Responsibilities: RNs highlighted that the increased workload in direct patient care left them with insufficient time for essential administrative tasks. These administrative responsibilities are crucial for the smooth functioning of healthcare facilities and ensuring proper patient documentation and care coordination.
Post-Pandemic Impact: Contrary to expectations that nursing shortages might ease after the pandemic, the study found that the shortages persist. Even as the pandemic has reduced patient numbers, staffing challenges remain, underscoring the long-term nature of the issue.
The findings of this study have significant implications for addressing nursing shortages in Vanuatu hospitals:
Increase Staffing: To alleviate heavy workloads and improve patient care quality, healthcare authorities in Vanuatu should consider increasing the number of nursing staff. Adequate staffing levels are essential to meet the demands of the medical wards.
Prioritize Recruitment and Retention: Strategies for recruiting and retaining nursing staff should be developed and implemented. Offering competitive compensation packages, professional development opportunities, and a supportive work environment can help attract and retain RNs.
Streamline Administrative Tasks: Efforts should be made to streamline administrative tasks and reduce the burden on RNs. This can be achieved through the use of healthcare technology and support staff to handle administrative responsibilities.
Continuous Monitoring: Healthcare authorities should continuously monitor staffing levels and workload to ensure that nursing shortages are promptly addressed. Regular assessments will help prevent the recurrence of staffing issues.
The study conducted by Adel Tutuo Tamata, Masoud Mohammadnezhad, and Ledua Tamani provides valuable insights into the factors contributing to nursing shortages in Vanuatu hospitals. By addressing these challenges through increased staffing, improved recruitment and retention strategies, and streamlined administrative processes, Vanuatu can take steps to enhance patient care quality and alleviate the burden on its dedicated nursing workforce. Nursing shortages are a complex issue, but with the right strategies, they can be mitigated to ensure that patients receive the care they deserve.
