The discussion about whether or not to date a psychiatric patient after discharge is complex and touches upon various ethical and professional considerations

QUESTION

Please read and reply to the discussion post below as it relates to the opinion of can or could you date a psychiatric patient after discharge.

I feel like it would depend on the severity of the illness, and if the person was willing to get help. Because I understand psychiatric patients, I feel like I have a heart for them. I was diagnosed in my 20s with panic disorder. It scared and changed my life. I was always so worried about telling people I had a mental disorder. I was afraid of being judged, or mistreated. I did not want to go on medications or go to therapy, because I did not want to be labeled as crazy. When you understand mental health and accept it and want the help, it is completely livable. However, I also did date someone when I was young and he was schizophrenic, I did not know until it came out year to two years later. He choose not to get help, he went into rehabs because he told people he wanted to kill everyone but me. It was scary, however I did not up and leave. I supported him getting help, I visited him in inpatient, and he now to this day married and with kids. However, meeting a patient in a psych ward and then dating them, I would not recommend. You are supposed to be professional and not build that type of relationship with your patients. There would be some clinical concerns for sure. In the same sense if I met them as a patient, I would not be able to date them. If I knew them in the past, had history and a relationship with them, and then they had psych issues and went away, I feel like I would stay. Dating a patient is going against policies and unethical. Building a trust, and professional relationship then going into a romantic relationship can harm the patient. The AMA code of medical ethics does not support an employee to date a patient after discharge as it is unethical. You never know what a patient’s intentions are. Then can seem, normal and safe and then once you step over those boundaries, you can harm yourself by dating this type of patient and or hurt your job/fired.

ANSWER

The discussion about whether or not to date a psychiatric patient after discharge is complex and touches upon various ethical and professional considerations. The participant in the discussion presents a nuanced perspective based on personal experiences and understanding of mental health.

The participant rightly highlights the importance of considering the severity of the illness and the individual’s willingness to seek help. This underscores the fact that mental health conditions exist on a spectrum, and not all cases are the same. It’s essential to differentiate between someone actively seeking treatment and support for their condition versus someone who chooses not to engage in treatment.

Personal experience with panic disorder adds depth to the participant’s viewpoint, as it allows for empathy and understanding of the stigma associated with mental health. It’s a reminder that individuals with mental health conditions often face judgment and discrimination, which can impact their willingness to seek help. This perspective reinforces the significance of providing a safe and nonjudgmental environment for patients.

The participant also shares a past experience of dating someone with schizophrenia who initially chose not to seek help. In this case, the emphasis is on supporting the individual in accessing treatment and demonstrating how, with appropriate intervention, individuals can lead fulfilling lives.

However, the participant acknowledges the importance of maintaining professional boundaries in clinical settings. Dating a current patient, as mentioned, is against policies and considered unethical. The potential risks, including harm to both the patient and the healthcare provider’s professional reputation, are highlighted.

Furthermore, the discussion references the AMA code of medical ethics, which discourages healthcare providers from dating patients after discharge, emphasizing the need to uphold ethical standards in the medical profession.

In conclusion, the participant’s response reflects a balanced perspective that takes into account personal experiences, empathy, ethical considerations, and the importance of maintaining professional boundaries in healthcare settings. It underscores the complexities of such situations and the need for careful ethical deliberation.
