For this discussion I chose the journal article Researching Mind Wondering from a First-person Perspective. The researchers’ aim was to determine if attention, the dependent variable, to the subject was maintained in various conditions. This study was conducted over a two-month period. The subject for attention was a paperclip. In the first part of the experiment the paperclip was held and visually observed by the participants. In the second part of the experiment the paperclip was not held but visualized in the mind of the participants. In the final segment of the experiment the participants were instructed to visualize the function of the paperclip. The independent variable in this experiment was the paperclip. The study showed that switching and broadening the concepts of the paperclip contributed to a decrease in attention.

This experiment method can be used to study memory, the dependent variable. Using a population of middle-aged men and women from no particular background the study would be conducted in two segments over a two-week period. In the first segment of the study the participants would have five cards with pictures of flowers on them, independent variable. The flowers would be colored in atypical colors. For example, the daisy may be blue, and the rose may be green. The participants would have fifteen minutes to study the cards. They would then be asked to recall the flower on each card and the color of the flower. In two weeks, the participants would be asked again to recall from memory the flowers and their colors from the cards without seeing the cards again. The hypothesis of this study would be that time can affect memory.

One strength of this study is that the flower colors are atypical. Roses are typically associated with the color red. This reduces the risk of a participant answering correctly based on what they already know. Because color is a factor in this study there is the potential for participant bias based on how that individual perceives color. Reisberg (2022) tells us that our perception and understanding of the world around us influences our behavior.
