Hello Class,
Discuss the importance of micronutrients and their function in the body. Choose two micronutrients and discuss the following:
According to the CDC (n.d.), micronutrients are essential for the body to function, promote healthy development, and prevent diseases. Micronutrients are more commonly referred to as vitamins and minerals, which come from consuming foods and liquids. Additionally, supplements are available when people have a more extreme deficiency or require additional micronutrients. Other benefits of micronutrients are supporting the Immune function, giving energy, and strengthening bones. Two micronutrients we’ll discuss today are iron and folate. The most important factor of having enough iron in the body is that “iron is a major component of hemoglobin” (Iron, n.d.). People who lack iron experience extreme fatigue, pale signs, and weakness. Another micronutrient is folate, which is especially vital for pregnant women. According to the Mayo Clinic (2023), folate is essential for red blood cell production and promotes healthy cell development. Common symptoms of folate deficiency are feeling fatigued and developing mouth sores. The toxicity of micronutrients is similar, and symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and behavioral changes.
What is the role of these nutrients in the prevention of disease? Provide examples.
These nutrients play an essential role in preventing diseases because they promote the immune system in all of its stages, which helps prevent or fight off diseases invading the body. Studies found strong links between the body fighting off COVID-19 or recovering from COVID-19 and consuming micronutrients (Ahmed, M. H., Hassan, A., & Molnár, J., 2021). These studies found that individuals who took additional vitamins E, C, D, and zinc led to improvements in their immune systems.

Hi [Peer’s Name],
I found your discussion on the importance of micronutrients and their function in the body to be quite informative. I’d like to add some thoughts and insights to our discussion:
Firstly, you mentioned that iron is a major component of hemoglobin. I completely agree, and I would like to emphasize how crucial iron is for the transport of oxygen in the blood. Hemoglobin binds to oxygen in the lungs and carries it to various tissues and organs, ensuring they receive the oxygen they need to function optimally. This role of iron in preventing diseases is especially significant because insufficient iron can lead to anemia, which can result in fatigue, weakness, and even compromised cognitive function.
Regarding folate, you highlighted its importance for red blood cell production and healthy cell development. I’d like to mention that folate is also crucial for DNA synthesis and repair. This has implications not only for overall health but also for the prevention of certain diseases, particularly neural tube defects in newborns. Adequate folate intake, especially during pregnancy, can significantly reduce the risk of such birth defects.
You also touched upon the role of these nutrients in preventing disease and provided an example related to COVID-19. I think it’s worth noting that micronutrients, such as vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc, play pivotal roles in supporting the immune system. They help in the production and function of immune cells and antibodies, which are essential for fighting off infections. Your mention of studies linking micronutrient supplementation to improved immune responses during COVID-19 is very relevant. It underscores the idea that maintaining proper nutrition is vital for disease prevention and overall well-being.
In conclusion, your discussion provided valuable insights into the importance of micronutrients, specifically iron and folate, and their roles in preventing diseases. I appreciate your emphasis on the significance of these nutrients for overall health and immunity. It’s a reminder of how proper nutrition can have a profound impact on our well-being and our ability to combat various health challenges.
