This week we will employ both visuals and words to create a collaborative learning exchange. This will be achieved through the generation of an informative Poster and supporting explanatory discussion. In STEP 2 instructions for the Poster component are outlined.
STEP 1: Explore your interests
Based upon this week’s lessons, pick the Cerebellum part of the brain you would like to learn more about.
Do some background research, finding a minimum of one scholarly journal article from the UMGC Library that provides insight into that part of the brain.
From the article, choose 3 or more interesting facts about the part of the brain you are researching and explain the facts. In some detail, prepare to present the facts either in your poster or in summary.
STEP 2: The Power of Images to Inform
Pick an aspect of your research and show it off! [This is your chance to be creative and to express what you are learning in a uniquely informative way – with pictures and images.] What you select to display is up to you. Here are some examples to get your creative thoughts flowing. Select…
To build your visual component for this task you will need to include the following:
1) At least 2 images (pictures, charts, and graphs all count as images) and
2) Your research reflecting the information you found pertaining to the area of the brain you researched. You will need to integrate your research and include in-text citations when referencing your research.
3 ) You should put effort into this assignment, but please do not feel overwhelmed by creating a visual. There are tools available to make your information look inviting and presentable while not requiring skill or knowledge in graphic design. Think of your visual as making a simplified “poster” about either a part of the brain or a study that teaches about that part of the brain. You may design the poster in any medium you desire, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop, Google Slides, or some other program. Suggestions include:
When your visual is complete provide a short paragraph describing the image, summarizing what your research shows, and explaining why you found it interesting.
The human brain is an intricate organ composed of various regions, each with its unique functions and importance. In this exploration, we delve into the fascinating world of the cerebellum, a part of the brain that plays a crucial role in coordination, movement, and beyond. We will present three intriguing facts about the cerebellum supported by scholarly research and complemented by a visual component to enhance understanding.
Fact 1: Coordination Center The cerebellum, often referred to as the “little brain,” is responsible for coordinating muscle movements and maintaining balance. It receives sensory input from various parts of the body, processes this information, and fine-tunes motor commands to ensure precise and coordinated movements.
Fact 2: Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome (CCAS) Beyond motor functions, research has revealed that damage to the cerebellum can lead to cognitive and emotional challenges. Patients with Cerebellar Cognitive Affective Syndrome (CCAS) may experience difficulties in planning, problem-solving, and regulating emotions. This highlights the cerebellum’s involvement in cognitive processes.
Fact 3: Learning and Memory The cerebellum’s role extends to learning and memory, particularly in tasks that require procedural memory, such as playing musical instruments or riding a bicycle. Studies have shown that the cerebellum contributes to the acquisition and retention of motor skills and habits.
Visual Component: The Cerebellum Poster To visually represent the cerebellum’s significance, we have created an informative poster. The poster includes:
Images: a. An anatomical illustration of the cerebellum to provide a visual reference. b. A diagram depicting the connections between the cerebellum and other brain regions, emphasizing its integrative role.
Research Integration:
In-text citations have been included to support the facts presented.
Graphs showing cerebellar activity during motor skill learning to emphasize its involvement in memory and learning processes.
Description of the Visual Component: The poster showcases the cerebellum’s structure and connectivity, highlighting its coordination and cognitive functions. The integrated research findings are visually represented to emphasize the cerebellum’s significance in both motor and cognitive domains.
The cerebellum is a remarkable part of the brain, playing a multifaceted role in coordination, cognition, and memory. This visual exploration, accompanied by scholarly research, sheds light on the intricate functions of the cerebellum, showcasing its importance in our daily lives. Understanding the cerebellum’s role enhances our appreciation of its contributions to our physical and cognitive abilities.
