Although our textbook listed five of the seven important psychotherapy types, I was strongly drawn to the practices of humanistic therapy over all the others. Humanistic therapy is described to be  “treatment for psychological disorders in which a therapist works with clients to help them develop their full potential for personal growth through greater insight” (Grison & Gazzaniga, 2022, p. 21052).  Many of the other types of psychotherapy seem to be methodical, focusing more on procedural or logical ways of healing a person, while humanistic therapy seemed like the practice that was influenced by positive introspections and self-improvement. Humanistic therapy revolves around being able to help others strengthen themselves psychologically through exploring and developing a patient’s sense of self. In what is called “client-centered therapy”, which allows for a patient, through their therapist, to understand and gain insight to their issues. From there, the patient can grow stronger and achieve their best potential in life. I consider myself as an optimistic and outgoing person, and the techniques that are utilized in humanistic therapy, I feel, would allow for these strengths to aid me in helping others. According to Grison and Gazzaniga (2022, p. 21022), “one key aspect of client-centered therapy is the creation of a safe and confronting setting… A good client/therapist relationship can give clients hope that they will receive the help they need.” In any conversation I have with another person, one of my priorities is making sure that I set a comfortable atmosphere in which the person I am talking to feels welcome. I tend to be sensitive to how others are feeling, so it is easy for me to adapt myself to fit the mood or topic of the conversation. If making a comforting space for a client is a key aspect of behavioral therapy, I feel confident that I can be effective if I were a therapist. Additionally, I find that I am the type of person that friends and family go to when they need encouragement or a safe environment to solve their issues. I can give good advice or comfort to ultimately help them grow stronger and address their problems the best they can, which I feel humanistic therapy is all about.
