ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

OBJECTIVE:

• Understand theory and practice in motivating people at organizations
• Develop critical thinking and evaluation skills

REQUIREMENT: Motivational theories attempt to explain how and why people are motivated to do the things that they do, and thus assist managers in motivating their employees. However, no theory is complete and there are many, often conflicting, theories out there.

In this assignment you are to look at these theories

• Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
• Herzberg’s two-factor theory of motivation
• Vroom’s Expectancy theory

Following are the tasks that you are to complete in this assignment.

• Explain how they provide an understanding of motivation at the workplace
• Explain how the theories can be applied in work place
• Explain weaknesses/shortcomings of the theories
• Discuss the similarities/differences between the three theories

TASK 1 – Write a WRITTEN REPORT based on the above assignment.

The written report is an individual assessment. Make sure that your assignment covers the following contents.

• Introduction: Introduce the topic and the assignment.
• Explanation of the theories:
  • Describe each theory
  • Discuss some ways in each theory can be applied
  • Explain the shortcomings/drawbacks of each theory
• Comparison:
  • Discuss the similarities and differences between the theories

Task 2

Oral Presentation

Present the findings of your report and present the overall findings to the class. The presentation (maximum 10 minutes) may contain the same sections as the written report.
