Haitian migrants and the usage of Title 42 Policy to expel migrants at the Border

Final Research Paper: Assignment Description

In the final paper you will use elements of what we have been working on throughout the semester to research a topic of your choosing, build an annotated bibliography, and write a 5–7 page research paper.

Your topic may be a debatable issue (one about which intelligent, reasonable, well-meaning people could disagree) or it may be expository (problem and solution, exemplification, explain/inform, describe, analyze, explore etc.).  Whichever you choose it must display synthesis, an integration of two or more sources our of which you create an original idea.  We will talk more about this about in greater detail as you begin the process of writing a thesis.

Debatable issue paper Expository (informative) paper
A debatable issue is one about which intelligent, well-meaning people might disagree; it does not need to be a highly controversial topic. Keep an open mind as you read a variety of sources reflecting different points of view. The thesis statement for an expository essay will suggest the kind of structure the paper will follow (e.g., problem and solution or exemplification) and will consist of one or two sentences that state the main idea of the paper and tell readers what to expect.

Whichever type you choose, it may be useful for you to write this on your major area of research; the work of organizing your ideas for someone who is not already familiar with your topic may help you present it later in your academic or professional career.

For this essay find 3-5 sources, and synthesize the information in your paper. There is information in Hacker about research papers on pages 329-346. (R1a – R2c).  Also read pp. 449-450 (APA-3d) on synthesizing. We will talk more about both research papers and synthesizing in class, and you will be assigned homework on these topics.

Please use APA documentation in your paper.   You will also hand in an annotated bibliography as part of this assignment. We will talk more about this in class.
