Understanding Behavior Psychology: Strengths, Limitations, and Historical Foundations

QUESTION

Thoughts and opinions (simple) on numbered responses. Please number and separate to not cause confusion.

1. A strength of behavior psychology is that it implies that human behavior is predictable and that one can predict how another person will react or how to elicit a response. This can be seen when parents are trying to discipline a child, reinforcment techniques such as rewards for good behavior and punishment for bad behavior is an example of how behavioral psychology can be used to change a child’s behavior. A limitation of behaviorism is that it ignores emotions, moods, and thoughts; so, it is helpful in understanding how some people learn, but is not the only explanation for how people behave or how they can behave (Cherry, 2023). Associationism is the forerunner of empiricism. Associationsim is the theory that complex mental processes such as thinking, memory, and learning can be explained by the associative links between ideas (American Psychological Association). Empiricism is the theory that all learning occurs from experience and observation. To connect associationism and empiricism, since empiricism depends on observation and experience, there needs to be some association from all of the information one takes in and senses, which is where associationism comes in. Primary contributors of associationism included Aristotle, whose laws of association became the basis of learning theory and John Locke, whose discussion of associationism came as an afterthought, but still accepted the fact that associative learning did occur (Henley, 2018). Primary contributors of empiricism included Thomas Hobbes, who believed all knowledge was derived from sensory experience, and John Locke again, who believed that ideas came from either sensation or reflection, both of which require sensory stimulation (Henley, 2018).

2. Behaviorism is a school of psychology founded by Watson, which insisted that psychology’s goal was the prediction and control of behavior. This is one of the strengths of psychology. Being able to predict behavior, being able to measure it, and control, it makes it objective. Such as when a child is having a tantrum, could be predicted, measured, and controlled. A weakness of behavior psychology is that it does not consider internal mindsets. Focusing only on the behavior and how to control, it leaves out the unseen (such as emotions, thoughts, biology, etc). Associationism is a school of psychology that connects learning to thought; the forerunner of behaviorism. The primary contributors to associationism were; Ivan Pavlov, who was known for the development of classical conditioning. B.F. Skinner, who was known for the development of operant conditioning. Hermann Ebbinghaus is known for his work on memory. They have contributed to shaping psychology to what it is today.

ANSWER

Understanding Behavior Psychology: Strengths, Limitations, and Historical Foundations

In the first response, the writer highlights the strength of behavior psychology in predicting and eliciting responses from individuals. They provide a practical example of using reinforcement techniques to modify a child’s behavior. However, they also acknowledge a limitation of behaviorism, as it tends to overlook emotions, moods, and thoughts in understanding human behavior. The connection between associationism and empiricism is also well-explained, linking sensory experience to the formation of associations in learning. The mention of primary contributors to both theories adds credibility to the explanation.

The second response provides a concise description of behaviorism as a school of psychology founded by Watson, emphasizing its focus on predicting and controlling behavior. The strength of this approach is recognized in its objectivity and practicality in dealing with behavior. However, a limitation is mentioned regarding its lack of consideration for internal mental processes. The writer briefly touches on associationism as the precursor to behaviorism, and they mention the primary contributors to both schools of thought, showing an understanding of their historical significance.

Overall, both responses demonstrate a good grasp of the concepts discussed. They provide simple explanations of the strengths and weaknesses of behaviorism while acknowledging the importance of considering internal mental processes. Additionally, the mention of primary contributors adds depth to the responses and shows familiarity with key figures in the history of psychology.
