There are three types of bullying, physical, emotional, and relational (Duffey & Del Vecchio-Scully, 2020). Online bullying is another type of bullying. A counselor working with children who are being bullied or bullied needs to be warm, empathetic, and compassionate and place a focus on strengthening the child’s self-worth and interpersonal relationships. Kids who are getting bullied are in a tremendous amount of pain and isolation and they need to feel heard and cared for. Anticipatory empathy, compassion, and active listening are tools that counselors can use when working with clients in these situations (Duffey & Del Vecchio-Scully, 2020). Learning Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) and using this as a model to help students would be helpful. This theory would help decrease the feeling of isolation and work through negative feelings that cause disconnection (APA, 2023).

As a clinical mental health counselor, I would work with the school system, specifically the parents of both children, the school counselor, the principal, and the child’s teachers to make sure everyone is on the same page about ways to help the student being bullied and how to stop the kids who are bullying. I would suggest coming to talk to the students about bullying and inclusivity.  Children who are being bullied are often from marginalized communities, such as immigrants, different sexual orientations or gender identities, religions, and people with disabilities (Duffey & Del Vecchio-Scully, 2020). Its important counselors make sure kids know who to reach out to for help if they are victims of bullying. Teaching kids how to stand up for classmates who are being bullied is important. Counselors can teach this skill to students. Asking kids hard questions about how they would feel if they were being bullied and keeping lines of communication open is important. I would also suggest making sure the suicide hotline number is available.

I would handle a parent who didn’t want to address their child’s bullying out of fear of the bullying getting worse by explaining that as the adults in this situation, we must be role models and express through action and word that this type of behavior is not tolerable or acceptable. Not only will the adults help the person who is being bullied, but they will also show others what is and what is not tolerable. They can inspire kids to be kind to others. Just one caring adult can save a life when it comes to a situation of bullying. By adults speaking out against bullying, it helps kids feel safe and supported.

Empowering Change: A Comprehensive Approach to Addressing Bullying in Schools

As a fellow clinical mental health counselor, I resonate with many of the ideas presented in the peer’s post regarding bullying intervention and prevention. Bullying is a pervasive issue in schools and communities, and it requires a collaborative approach from counselors, educators, parents, and other stakeholders to effectively address it.

I agree with the peer’s emphasis on the importance of warmth, empathy, and compassion when working with children who are experiencing bullying or engaging in bullying behaviors. Building a trusting and supportive therapeutic relationship is crucial to help children feel heard, validated, and understood. Utilizing anticipatory empathy, compassion, and active listening techniques, as mentioned in Duffey & Del Vecchio-Scully (2020), can greatly enhance the therapeutic process with these young clients.

Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) is a valuable approach that can be integrated into counseling sessions to address feelings of isolation and disconnection caused by bullying experiences. RCT focuses on building authentic and empathetic relationships, which aligns well with the goal of reducing the negative impact of bullying on a child’s sense of self-worth and interpersonal connections.

The suggestion to work closely with the school system, parents, teachers, and other professionals is vital in creating a comprehensive support system for children involved in bullying situations. Collaboration with school personnel allows for a coordinated effort to address bullying both at the individual and systemic levels. Additionally, conducting bullying awareness programs and teaching students how to be allies and stand up against bullying aligns with a proactive approach to prevent bullying behaviors.

I wholeheartedly agree with the peer’s approach in handling parents who may be hesitant to address their child’s bullying experiences out of fear of exacerbating the situation. As counselors, we have a responsibility to educate parents about the importance of modeling anti-bullying behavior and setting a positive example for their children. By taking a stand against bullying and fostering a culture of kindness and inclusivity, adults can empower children to feel safe and supported in their environment.

In conclusion, addressing bullying requires a multifaceted approach that involves empathy, collaboration, and proactive prevention strategies. As mental health counselors, we play a critical role in supporting children who experience bullying and in promoting positive change within the school community. By employing evidence-based practices and fostering open communication, we can create a safer and more compassionate environment for all students.
